I have fond memories of this game, I must admit. Around the time this game was released I was big on the PS1 and the N64, while my brother was into Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament. Unreal Tournament was the game my brother used to get me into PC gaming and he pushed me to actually get good at shooters. To this day, this is the definitive shooter for me. When my brother wanted to shoot me, I always preferred Unreal Tournament. It feels a lot faster than other multiplayer shooters at the time and has some of the coolest levels in any game. The level design is ingenious and only made better with the pacing - you can quickly get a feel for any given map because you move fast enough to quickly explore a level, but shoot-offs become tense because running from a conflict often isn't a feasible option. Each weapon has it's own distinct use and even the seemingly useless ripper and bio-rifle will get a few uses (low on health and you know you have enemies around a corner? use the ripper! Trying to run from a conflict? use the bio-rifle as you flee to make it a harmful affair to just follow you!). The game's only flaw adds some charm - the game comes off as unbelievable silly when the computer taunts you with "die bitch" and such, but the over the top (and somewhat immature) demeanor of the game is part of the charm. The game is a celebration of violent video games and their in-your-face attitude. The gibs, the excessive blood, and the computer's crude insults only add a charm to this game. It's the teenage gamer conception of cool taken to the logical extreme but it never feels offensive, just cringe worthy. Buy this, load up the multiplayer, and experience the best multiplayer experience of the past decade.
