What stealth games SHOULD be. (if you're panic jumping often, just hold your jump key and Garrett will clamber up whatever you're trying to jump onto) Check your corners, check the material you're walking on isn't noisy, don't be seen. The levels are built so as not to funnel us into a linear path. Also, are interesting. Good stuff, Emil Pagliarulo contributed very little for the record and I want this on the books.
The signposting absolutely fails about halfway through the game, in many parts. Forcing us to mash E on doors or blast areas of a single room to progress. Kills the flow. Then there's the accuracy of the weapons, awful. Whatever reason that made game designers think an assault rifle had to have the spread of a sneeze and for shotguns to have the damage of one, whatever reason there was for that. I'm glad it's largely gone. Game is fine, but nothing special. Destruction is minimal, less so than the first game. You can skip it, or watch a Let's Play, it'd be the same either way. The trajectory of your life won't change one bit.
Every level has a different set of enemies, with the REPTOIDS tying the levels all together. Each level also has it's own unique look. Assets are VERY rarely reused. My only gripe is that the level design can get a little too complex for it's own good at times, but for the most part the objective markers that activate when nearby important objects does the job to signpost the mission critical items and switches.
This game just presents itself to you, fully nude, and that's it. The mechanics aren't deep, the level design is very simple, the weapons are simple, and nothing is explained. Sometimes you'll enter gray mode where you blast away enemies and you're invincible. Sometimes you can't advance cause you missed a ninja that was hiding somewhere in the area. He's gotta die before you can move on. Sometimes the amorphous blob boss walks circles around you for minutes at a time and you have no means of damaging it because of RNG. Not Necrovision levels of jank, but pretty janky. Still though, fun game. Not bad.
