Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - Obsidian Edition

Solid title, but held back by GOG Galaxy

I regret installing this game via GoG Galaxy. Not only won't some of the DLCs that I own activate (even though I also installed them manually via the downloadable exes), the game also does not manage to verify its files. (stuck at 0% indefinetly). This is on fast fiber internet and running on PCIx4 m.2 NVME SSD with plenty of space left on the System SSD for TEMP files. When the game starts up, clicking the GoG overlay makes windows throw up a "program not responding warning". Nice. Probably Unity engine's fault. When closing the game, GoG client keeps sticking around like a guest that won't leave. The game itself is nice. Solid world building great characters and voice acting. All in All, more PoE, with what seems to be decent improvements over the first game. Hope the ending is better/less rushed, but I'm not that far into the game. 10/10 Wish Obsidian had gotten the Baldurs Gate licence to make BG3.

Star Trek™: Starfleet Academy

Classic good game

This has been a great title of the FMA Spaceflight era. Overall it is a lot like Wing Commander 3 and 4, except it's Star Trek. Ship combat is a lot slower than in the Wing Commander games. You'll have to put a bit more effort on energy management and positioning rather than keeping your crosshair on the target all the time. When taking damage, systems will go offline and you'll need to manage repair priorities. Since you are in simulated missions, you'll have to follow Starfleet protocol and will be graded on your conduct. Aside from the simulator missions, you'll make decisions in the FMA sequences regarding events on campus. Props to GoG's to patch the game to run on modern systems!

Stellaris

Fun game!

This game is nice, expect to fail a lot with your Empire in the beginning. Maybe follow a youtuber like Aspec to get your bearings. A good news for all non-steam owners: There is now mod support for GoG versions through the Paradox Mods plattform! (mods.paradoxplaza.com). Really important for a content-rich game like Stellaris.

Descent: Freespace Battle Pack

Great game, use MODs!

This game was and still is fantastic! To get around some of the issues caused by its age (640x480 resolution for example), get also FS2 on gog, then get the Freespace Open installer and get the pack that integrates FS1 into FS Open. You'll need the gog version of these games for the assets. You'll find it to look and run amazing on modern hardware. i think even VR support is either already in, or not far anymore. Putting Freespace into open source was a great great thing the Volition founders did back then!!

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition

EE needed seamless BG2 mod support :-(

You get a lot of fantastic playtime out of Baldur's Gate 1+2. With the Enhanced Edition you gain built-in widescreen support and a nifty zoom feature, but it costs you support for hundreds of mods (many adding complete campaigns with solid writing). Why bother paying double for 3 EE characters if you can get a dozen or so mod characters that also bring individual banter dialogues. Save yourself some money and get the non-EE version and get the BIG WORLD installer, it'll run BG1+2 in the BG2 engine and also allow you to add tons of quality mods in one installer. Mod support in EE is just too intransparent :-/ If you hate mods, you can get EE, but you will miss out on much that kept the demand for BG for 15 years.

Shadow Warrior 2

Fun, with issues, and feels diluted.

First of all, the game is fun if you like the kind of dickjoke humor that it flops on the table. On the other hand, in 2 player coop the enemies turn into bullet sponges, what makes combat feel a LOT more drawn out than in SP (of same or higher difficulty). No one shotting guys with your swords special attacks there. Elite and Superior enemies take a good minute of hacking and slicing until they go down. Makes coop feel quite different from the SP mode. Another coop thing: There is no alert that you were invited to a private game, which is silly. cross platform multiplayer with Steam owners looks like it is total nightmare to make it work, so if you plan on doing that, beware. Also it takes me usually 2-3 attempts to join sessions with my friends on the other side of the ocean, which in most other FPS games is not a problem. At least the error message is funny for now.
