If you like Larian games fine. It's taken Larian's usual approach and added "Baldur's Gate" to the title but apart from that its very different to the titles it is supposed to honour. Its beautiful but the UI is slightly clunky and finding specific actions can be a nightmare. The party members seem to be walking demographic tick boxes. They should also do something about the dice rolls; yes, I know its decided on a d20 but having to watch the animation of the roll over and over is just irritating. It feels like a game that tries to be all things to all people and suffers by stretching itself to thin. If you like the Divinity games then you'll probably enjoy it. If you like Baldur's Gate 1/2, pick up the Pathfinder or Pillars of Eternity games because they are the real "spiritual sucessors".
I was a fan of the original and so snapped this up when it came out. Its buggy, and in a way that quietly shuts your city down without much warning. For example, your trade routes stop functioning when you make edits to them and your fishing boats stop harvesting, starving your city very quickly. The battle system is also changed and while on paper I think its an improvement, it doesn't mesh well with one of the God's blessings.
I love this game. It brings a lot of humour to the standard Ceasar/Pharoah formula which were themselves fairly amusing. In a brilliant change from the rest of the genre the gods will activley enter your cities. Build a great temple to Athena and watch her patrol your city and protect you from invaders and other lesser gods, or build a temple to Poseidon and watch your maritime industries flourish. These games take the city builder genre and mix it up allowing you to follow the infighting of the city states and the quests of legendary heroes. A fantastic game that I come back to time and again even now, so many years after its release.
