The creators of this game just shovel loads of story text at you that are made up of mostly vague and meandering references that treat concepts and ideas as if they were solid objects or places or people or whatever, and so it grows increasingly pretentious, boring and ultimately nonsensical. Pain this, pain that. Death this, death that, blah blah blah. Nice artwork. Managed to get through it with a minimum of combat, so I suppose in this regard it can be compared to Planescape: Torment. But overall a rather uninspired effort. Still, I was able to finish it, due to its very short length, more than I can say about its failed cousin, Pillars of Eternity, which was even more of a chore to play. Nice try, but no.
There's not much to add concerning the superlatives heaped on this production, superlatives piled on deservedly so. The only criticism I have of "Planescape: Torment" is that it forever ruined the genre for me, as no one has been able to create anything remotely close in scale and storytelling grandeur since. Hence, the NeverWinter Nights and Dragon Ages and so forth, despite their technical advancements, I find unplayable since I have experienced the ultimate RPG already in "Placescape: Torment." Sadly, I doubt that anything like this will ever be produced again -- it is from a time when publishers were willing to take risks, rather than pumping out another Morrowind or Sky Rim or whatever ... Sigh. Buy it and play it by all means if you have not done so already. But be warned. The good: the greatest RPG of them all. The bad: The greatest RPG of them all. The ugly: Everything in the genre that came after.
I am reading all these reviews about how wonderful this game is. Maybe it is, but the copy I installed has some serious problems. For example, how does one access the options menu? Or even quit the game? There is nothing in the flimsy documentation about how to do the most basic things. I am presented only with an option to race, no place to slect a controller or, like I said, how to quit the game. Am I missing something here? I am trying this thing on a PC with Windows 7.
