Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

Engaging storytelling absorbing gameplay

I've played so many solo Adventure RPGs over the years, but none captivated my attention and made me care about the characters the way KCD2 did. Absolutely blown away by the gameplay, the story, the way the characters feel alive. The writing is the best I've ever seen. Everything flows, fits together, the pacing is right, the choices realistic, the tension hits just right, as does the humor. The depth to which the devs went to make a complex choice system that actually feels like it has consequenses, including the order in which you do certain things, feels like a love letter to players. Absorbing and immersive, and yes at times quite difficult, but all the more satisfying for it. This is a very hard game at first, but the difficulty feels earned, realistic, and not hard just for the sake of being hard. *cough*soulsgames*cough* The difficulty isn't there to punish you or test your "gamer mettle" it's there because that's how it would go irl. This is a well crafted game that by devs that care about the experience rather than the money they could make on it, and it shows. You're going to see a lot of "The combat is so hard!" and yeah, it is, and normally I hate "git gud" but in the case of KCD2 it is completely true not because *you* are a bad player, but because the player character has to do it. It's somewhat unique in that both you and the character start as an inexperienced yokle, so you're learning the combat system at the same time the player character is. I hated that at first but came to adore it. Immersive beyond belief.

Sherlock Holmes Chapter One

Overly complicated mechanics

The gameplay is almost non-existent. I grew up playing adventure and mystery games, and none of them were anywhere near as complicated as this.
