Yeah, I put 5 stars. That doesn't mean the game is perfect, you'll certainly encounter some bugs and terrible AI (from the humans) But that means it is unique. It is creative and well crafted. It is worth your time, enjoyable, and if you like horror games you would actually miss out by skipping on this
I won't spend too much time saying what's been said thousands of time : this is a wonderfull game, the art style is amazing, the music is delightful, the combats are intense, the controls feel good, it is long, it is rich with great content, secrets, abilities, hidden lore, optionnal bosses. It is worth your time and your money. But... I'd like to talk about the two reasons you may NOT like this game, and give you some advice that may help you go through this : 1. It is hard. Hollow Knight is a game that is meant to challenge you and it will. You may pass the first few bosses quite easily but the game will quickly require that you learn specifically how to beat the bosses, and this will often take more than just a few tries. This may feel frustrating if you're used to more casual games. Luckily, the world of Hollow Knight is very vast, so you're not forced to headbutt the same opponent again and again until you get mad. Go explore, do a sidequest, try to sharpen your skills on common ennemies... The good thing is, once you understand how to deal with a boss, it starts feeling easy, even though it felt impossible at the start. It feels really rewarding to know that, since there's no grinding mechanic in this game, it's only due to your commitment. 2. You'll get lost. This also may feel frustrating if you're used to other systems, but will get very satisfying in the long run. You start with no map, no quill and no compass, and the three are to be bought separately so you can start to update a little bit of map once in a while at a checkpoint. At the beginning, this will be very confusing. Please don't let that discourage you. Just pick one path and carry on. Pick another if it seems too difficult. You'll soon become addicted to this mechanic that pushes you to explore every corner, and by the time you reach the edges of this world, you'll find yourself wishing there was still more uncharted land to uncover.
So, what's the problem with this one ? Well, first, let's talk about what's good in it : - Very nice and colorful graphism - An interesting and intuitive, minimalistic health system - Quite a good feeling to handle So what's the problem ? Lots of people talk about the difficulty of this game. I'd say it's more like you have a pattern, a very precise pattern you have to respect through all the level, if you don't want to die. There's really little freedom, you can't improvise, you can't find other strategies. You just have to : 1.know the level 2.have very good reflexes As it quicly becomes a very difficult pattern to follow, I gave up.
[Only 4 stars because I didn't finish yet. But I'm entirely satisfied so far.] I like Dark Souls but my PC died and I have this tiny laptop. I was searching a game with the same feeling, but with very low requirements, and I think I found it. What I like with Momodora [so far] : - A very fluid and pleasant gameplay. - A difficulty level that suits me very well, and that you can adjust (To give you an idea, I think normal mode is a bit easier than Dark Souls, about the same as Hyperlight Drifter, a bit harder than Binding of Isaac, a lot harder than Bastion, way easier than Spelunky. Hope that helps.) - Nice designs, graphisms and animation (and everything looks so damn cute !) - A very good lvl design, with lots of connections, hidden paths, etc. - The possibility to roam freely in areas you already know, gathering money or simply training. - Awesome piano musics. - A quite conventional but nicely done story. - A lot of charismatic female characters - French version What I don't like with Momodora [so far] : - Some visual clues may be a bit misleading at first, like when your bow is charged, the red frame makes it look like you took a hit. - I expected a bit more stuff to wear and use (It's seems to be "Hyperlight Drifter" lvl). - I'm not always sure where to go next. - The lack of plunging attack (only air strike) can be annoying in a few specific situations. - The minimap looks really cheap. - I'm a bit confused by the boss named Lubella (the huge witch you can see in the trailer). The idea of putting such a strongly sexualized character ruins a part of the elegant innocence of this game for me. As you can see, the cons are quite laughable. So if you liked the trailer and if you're not afraid of games that require a bit of skill, if you like Dark Souls, Hyperlight Drifter and cats, enjoy !
