The game without a doubt has an interesting setting, story and characters but unfortunately the gameplay is a real letdown. It appears similar to XCOM and other turn based team/squad shooters but most of the encounters require a specific loadout and killing enemies in a specific order lest you get absolutely steamrolled so you don't really get much choice in how you approach anything which just gets tiring after a while.
TLDR: It's pretty fun to play as RoboCop for a while but only those desperately seeking fan service despite its questionable quality will find enjoyment beyond the first hour. FULL: Remember RoboCop 3? This game is kinda like that (it's also set in between 2 and 3). Sure you get more RoboCop but it's not even close to capturing any aspect of the OG film. The story is weak, like frail elderly weak. The jokes and satire throughout are alright but again it's not the scathing hilarious satire of the OG film, it's just a flimsy attempt to recreate it. Having Peter Weller as the voice of RoboCop is awesome even if his voice has been altered a bit too much but the rest of the VA cast don't even remotely try to sound like their movie counterparts which is disappointing and kinda annoying. But the biggest issues are the gameplay and graphics themselves. Gameplay doesn't really deviate much; walk around, collect "evidence", shoot a lot and occasionaly run through some basic "investigation" style sidequests that have about as much depth as a kiddie pool. There's a levelling up and upgrade system for Robo and his gun but its all standard fare and feels tacked on just to artificially add length/depth. The level designs are serviceable at best, semi open areas with a lot of reused assets that aren't too dissimilar to what we got from Teyon's Terminator game. Ultimately, everything has a rough edge to it that's really more at home with a fanmade project rather than a studio project, issues like assets and textures not loading properly, facial animations and syncing with the dialogue is very hit and miss. It's the kind of jank and lack of polish that one cannot justify paying full price for or even half price. I'd say minimum 60% discount otherwise you're overpaying.
Dredge is a interesting little adventure game with some great Lovecraft-esque influences. You play as a fisherman newly arrived or washed up on the small island of Marrow. From there you'll be given a boat and the opportunity to start catching some fish and attempt to make sense of the strange place you now find yourself in. There's the usual fare to expect from any kind of game like this, NPCs to interact with, small quests to do, several different regions to explore, upgrades for the boat and so on and while none of the game's systems are very deep they are, for the most part, well implemented with the highlight being the stark changes between the sea/ocean during the day vs what you'll see and hear at night! My only gripe would be the game's length and lack of replay value. It could definitely have expanded on some things to add more hours to the game and unfortunately you'd be hard pressed to find a reason to play it a second time around once completed so I would recommend getting it on sale.
3.5/5 - Days Gone doesn't have the biggest/broadest offering in terms of the open world experience but that doesn't detract from what is overall still a fun gaming experience, whether that's tearing through the countryside racing along abandoned roads on your drifter bike or taking it to the zombies, marauders and rippers with your array of weapons, you'll find there's still enough to get PLENTY of hours out of this title which ultimately makes it a shame we won't get a sequel to see the ideas and concepts given a proper chance to be fleshed out.
If you've played the two Dracula point and click titles, The Resurrection and The Last Sanctuary, by the same developer you have a good idea of what you're in for for the most part. Unfortunately where it falls flat is that it's rather inferior to both of those games despite being released later. Not sure if maybe it was developed earlier only to be released later or not but the character models, environments and puzzles just aren't as good. Some of the puzzles are downright confounding with little to guide you so it's best to keep a walkthrough on hand, others are simple but a bit tedious. Still, the atmosphere is pretty good and if you like horror point and clicks, Lovecraft and were perhaps fans of the Dracula titles it's worth grabbing.
Fun game, good sequel. All the improvements are there. Ignore the mouthbreathing review bombers whining about no online functionality. This is GOG, stuff that requires DRM isn't included for obvious reasons and the online features do NOT affect core gameplay or story or functionality whatsoever.
