Everyone remembers Doom for being the Godfather of first person shooters, but Descent is the game that took arcade FPS and threw in six degrees of freedom into this turbulant mix! Playing this game on PlayStation did this franchise little justice - It wasn't until you installed this game on your beast of a PC and break out the state of art peripherals (eg, Joysticks, Gamepads, HOTAS rigs, VR Headsets, etc.) did you begin to appreciate the experience this franchise has to offer. Frantic combat with boots on th ground is one thing, just try the same thing in zero-G 360 degree combat in tight spaces. The first two games offer arguably the pinacle experience as you levels involve fighting your way through swams of robots armed to the teeth into order to blow a reactor, the race like a bat of hell to the exit just as Wedge Antilles and Lando Calrisian did in Return of the Jedi - Not making the exit before the reactor blows is pretty obvious as you lose a life and all the sweet gear you racked up in the previous levels. Both Descent 1 & 2 run beautifully on both Windows and Macintosh... Run the games with DXX Rebirth for Linux along with extra peripheral support and these games really rock! Best workout I ever got was setting my Yaw to the rudder pedals on my CH HOTAS ;)
