Not the best mech game of that era.

The 1990s were an exciting time in PC gaming and it was also the decade that produced some great mech games. Unfortunately Shattered Steel was not one of the top choices. The Metaltech: Earthsiege series and of course the Mechwarrior series were both much better than this title. Shattered Steel does have many good qualities though. The sound is great with the excellent movie quality soundtrack and the decent computerized voice acting. The graphics were on par with what was out at the time although the models were a bit clunky compared to Earthsiege or Mechwarrior. My biggest issue with this re-release is that it is almost unplayable even with Dosbox. Collision detection is almost non-existent unless you slow down the CPU cycles in Dosbox so much that the game becomes choppy. Some have suggested firing underneath the ground enemies which does work to some degree, but still the accuracy rate is deplorable. By the time you are done wasting your very limited ammo on trying to hit just one target you are out of ammo and have very few resources to kill the rest of your enemies. Even with Dosbox trying to slow this title down the playability is so bad it is better to just let this title rest in the memories of our past.

Broken GoG Release

The GoG version of this game is broken. While tweaks by forum posters such as XandreUK help a little, but even with those tweaks the collision detection for weapons is broken, resulting in a game that's barely playable.

Hit detection not working

I am playing the first couple of missions and my laser beams are clipping directly through the enemies 60-70% of the time. I am wondering if my PC is too fast (I've heard that old games that run on very fast PC can sometimes do this since they were never optimized for future machines). In any case I am forced to use missiles to destroy all the mechs via splash damage and I run out of missiles too quickly to finish beyond the 3rd mission.

Hit and Collision Detection

Overall it seems like a decent game for its time but the main issue right now is the absolutely inacceptable hit and collision detection. It seems like every building is 3 times its actual size yet you're unable to hit is unless you target specific spots from equally specific angles. Likewise you can only hit a lot of enemies by targeting specific spots from certain angles. This problem is mostly tied to laser weapons as gatling guns seem to do way better, at least against mobile units. At the same time it seems like enemies and buildings have lots of varied hit zones enabling the player to destroy subsections of it. Like parts of a building that will fall off without damaging the entire structure or being able to shoot off an enemies head or a limb. Something must have gone severely wrong here and I'm not sure what but it's really hard to play a game like this when you can never be sure if you're hitting what you're shooting at even at point blank range. Difficulty also seems to be all over the place. One might be playing through several missions without any problems only to encounter something that's almost impossible to beat. Then it's suddenly easy again. Difficulty settings don't help in the least. Only buy this if you're ready for lots of frustration along the way.

a good game, but GOGs version is broken

I was about to give up on this one, - i played this title at last, having it in my GOG ibrary for years, only to find that I couldnt select weapons in the arming bay nor were my weapons ever appearing to even hit the enemy. In fact, missiles were literally flying through targets. I thought perhaps that Shattered Steel was just an impossibly hard game or badly made one, but instead it appears GOG have not done their due diligence to actually set the game up properly in dosbox. I turned to Exodos and tried the game there and it runs perfectly - no hit detection issues and arming bay works correctly. Thank you to ExoDOS for doing what GOG cant be bothered to do.
