Planescape: Torment

Nobody does it better...

...eventhough 007 has absolutely nothing to do with this epic piece of digital art, this title of one of his movies is the best way to describe, what Planescape Torment truly is. Even masterpieces like Baldur´s Gate I and II have to stand in the big shadow, PT puts on the RPG-landscape. Planescape Torment simply had it all. Graphics were a bit different to BG or IWD and very detailed. The soundtrack (thanks to GOG to put it on "extras") is one of the most emotional and beautiful score, I ever listened to in a game. But what makes this game truly outstanding, is the story, which covers almost every aspect of any movie genre that there can be. You get quite a bit of comedy, you get a bit of horror, and so on and on... You also get to decide your fate, and the fate of a lot of other charakters you meet on your journey. Your decisions have little to huge impact on what happens in your future until the very end of the game. What planescape does like no other game, is to take you from the very beginning and drag you right into this world and its inhabitants. If today you read about so called "open worlds" you immediatelly think of the mountains you can climb without beeing forced to take a pre-set route to the top or to run right through to the highest-leveled "mobs". Planescape Torment is a open world-RPG in a much different meaning. It is a open world, in what you do (or do not). However, when it was put on the shelves, it certainly did not get the attention, it so truly deserves. It even was given poor ratings (78/100 or low 80 scores) by quite a lot of gaming magazines. It seems, that at the time, PT was released, the world just wasn´t ready for it... ...and that´s what it said about certain art(ists) as well. ;-)
