Having been cut from $9.99 down to $5.99 makes this game much more worthwhile than before. Shadowgrounds is from late 2005, but as a look and feel distinct to the pre-Half-Life 2 period of the early 00s. Controls are tight and the visual experience is devoid of too many embellishments. Subsequently the game has a minimalist feel and lacks overcomplicated mechanics, but also much in the way of real depth. While there is a fair variety of weapons that can be upgraded and modified, I found myself sticking to only a couple of the weapons by the late game (particularly the electric gun). There's a good variety of enemies, often appearing in hordes, that make the game challenging but never too frustrating. The lack of any kind of internet multiplayer does hamper the game a bit, as it is quite a lot of fun co-operatively. Altogether a good experience for $5.99 if you're looking for a bit of (mostly) mindless shooting.
