Though Creatures was my very first experience with video games and I am understandably nostalgic, to this day I maintain that it lacks a modern equivalent, despite the advanced technology. Other artificial life simulations like The Sims or Spore simply fall flat. They don't simulate life so much as copy it, and badly. Whereas Creatures is accompanied with complex genetics, biochemistry, neurology and real evolution. A point many people complain about is that you cannot force the Norns to do anything; you can only suggest, and they may not obey you. This reflects life more than any other feature. This game is not about playing God - it is about the responsibility you will feel towards these creatures, and raising them to care for themselves, like a parent.
