Starcom: Unknown Space

A worthy successor

It's easier to talk about what I didn't like than what I did, because Starcom scratches the space exploration itch in nearly every way that counts. I didn't enjoy the story quite as much as the first one, and while the shipbuilding was dramatically improved, the glut of expensive weapons techs and the resource cost of a lot of modules meant I finished the game not researching or installing a significant number of ship systems. I also liked the introduction of a command staff to make things a little more personal, although I missed the 'crew' being at risk during away missions. My favourite quests from the first game involved crew members in mortal peril doing brave and heroic things to protect their shipmates- you don't really get that here when only the command staff land and they can't be killed. Overall, these are minor complaints. You can get more exhaustive descriptions of the gameplay and its mechanics in other reviews, I would definitely recommend this one to any fans of Star Trek, Star Control or anything in between.
