This one of the last phrases in the game and its totally true. I was fan of original PoP (at least its NES version, where you have only 1 hour to complete the game and saves to save the progress between levels), so I knew what this game should look like when I played it at the first time maybe 16-17 years ago. And it was good - and it is now, after my 2nd re-run I can say - it aged well. Good: +Soundtrack (soft oriental-like rock) fits the game perfectly + Puzzles - neither easy no difficult, balanced enough to complete the game without dying with using rewind if you are skilled enough, but most important - they never (!) frustrated me enough to quit the game. The were 2 points in the game (for 7 hours walkthrough) where I stuck for maybe 20 minutes, because I just suck at platforming (despite of completion Lara Croft - LAU series, lol) Mediocre: ¬Fights and combat system - if you haven't ever played Warrior within, you could exclude this point. Basically there are no combos in this game, several types of attacks and parries (I was literally shocked - I played Russian fully localized version before and he game hints NEVER mentioned that. It works well enough, especially in 1v1 - deathloops - absorption of enemy or freezing one gets rewind buffer to reset - so if you have no health -you will die after getting hit, no matter how many sand charges you have Bad(?): - Fixed camera angles (irritating) - you can jump in different direction, than you expected Strategy advice: ¬do not use multi-freeze for all charges - enemies are locked at 4-at-once, you will never get enough value of it (IMO much better to use basic freeze on enemies that counter your jumping over them, hit them once, wait until they fall and absorb - you spend 1 meter and return 0.5 Summary - great game that is perfect for a person who never played puzzles and platformers - but want to give it a shot. Nice story (but some moments are 14 or 16+) so I do not recommend children to play this game
New movement system is laggy and questionable at least. 1 stucking animation loops 2 clipping through objects 3 jumping with 180 degrees midair turn (leads to death btw) 4 camera goes mad in narrow places 5 dead enemies models just stay midair (bats ragdolls) 6 Softlocked the game in the Thor's room (triggered slime to rise, fell down, but not died -> game autosaved -> checkpoint with 5-7 seconds to see how the slime rises and kills me, VERY NICE) + Graphics is awesome and feels more natural and realistic + very cool visual design (really several locations can be used as wallpapers) - epic, beautiful and ancient + most nimble Lara - responsive controls (but implementation is meh-level) ? All guns are available from the start and they kinda ruin the challenge (smg's and shotgun just stomp most enemies with their hit-stun mechanic) ? Final boss "fight" (what the hell she even doing? Random projectiles to random places, no tracking Lara - main menu in console-like style, less options, less user friendly - Doppelganger gameplay is only part of the console version :( - too many 'secrets' that are not real secrets, but more check of you thoroughness (50 per level - its not joke) - I prefer quality over quantity. Feels cheap - press 'e' to kick the jar - no time attack mode - no 'cheats' from 2 previous parts (did not used most of them but it still a content and a bit of fun and relax for some people) - compare greek's trials from Anniversary to Shibalba one's. They are OVERsimplified and feel cheap and lazy - excessive amount of healing items and checkpoints, full hp restoration upon death = broken battle balance and game pacing - Mjolnir is LITERALLY Excalibur from TR-Legend - same moveset (despite of 1 is a sword and 2 is a hammer) - CHEAPEST cutscene instead of epic fight vs doppelganger The main point - the game is average, very unpolished, and could be MUCH, MUCH better. Probably the weakest one of the trilogy, but worth to play once
Start this game after TRA and it was.... not a pain, but disappointment. Controls are worse, game design and puzzles are much more straight-forward, the story is... good. Crystal Dynamics did a great job improving concepts of this game in TRA. I don't know, maybe I get old, but this game is too bloody and violent compare to what I remembered. Freaking nostalgia( So about the game + it is still good looking ++ Croft manor is astonishing (return to TRA and see how they deconstructed familiar places, very nice) + so many Lara costumes ;) + locations overall - they all are different and interesting - "next generation" mode is a bit buggy and can cause crashes at some points, so if you crash, try switch it off - too much shooting and the shooting part is bad (most of the times you will exchange shots with opponents with 0 chance to dodge, almost impossible to beat this game with 0 damage taken - the game is designed to tank through, using medpacks - bike levels!!!) - camera in bike levels is literally awful (cmon its not Resident Evil, I want to see what is in front of me when i ride the bike on 100 km/h - too simple in some moments (even on hard) and too cheesy in others, too straight-forward (Hint - you can cancel reload animation of any weapon by ducking - might help when using assault rifle and MP5. Shotgun is trashy) When I was younger I liked this game much more. And I fell in love with TRA again. But this one - no. See you in the TRU review!
First and best of the old trilogy Remember the order - Anniversary - Legend - Underworld (Legend was earlier but the story begins in anniversary) + Nice artwork (many years I had screenshots of the game (Peru level) as my desktop backgrounds, only Castlevania Lord of Shadows 2 had more epic sights) +Nice level design (at least MOST of the times) - levels are puzzles that are combined with each other in a good manner. Sometimes levels can be cruel and seem unfair (Egypt!) but the game overall make it great + Nice difficulty scaling (only latest enemies are really tough (Egypt), puzzles maybe a bit complex in the end, but the difference is subtle because you learn game patterns + Nice ambient soundtrack + Boss fights are realtime puzzles! + Checkpoint system make it easy to explore and not afraid of dying. Sometimes you just want to test those leaps of fate and you not risking anything + Secrets and Time Attack - these 2 thing make the game hard for me. Managing time, routing and solving puzzles that are not the part of the main story line (for cheats, new skins and trophies in your Manor) are totally worth it + Developer commentaries (just try it) - QTE - too easy, could be very interesting and intense boss fights (Larson, King Kade, Kid) sometimes they kinda mess up the game pace (T-Rex, endgame) - weird input lags - scary (but not really) save corruption WARNING! If your game crashed or you just Alt+F4 the game, or PC was shut down - your autosave could be lost. Thats why I recommend to save progress at least twice per level. Also if you cant find your saves because the old corrupted autosave blocks them you need to do next steps: 1. Go to the game folder 2. Make the backup of your saves 3. Start new game, wait for the new, proper autosave 4. You can now load your old saves again! (or try other ways from the web) Hope you will enjoy this game as much as I did! (also after finishing I recommend to find on YT speedruns for this game, both glitchless and Any%)
My god I love this game. If you like Split Second, BurnOut Paradise - you MUST try this one too. It mostly encourages aggressive driving style, but totally fine with clean perfect driving. It has unique AI with their own in-game patterns, physics and incredible damage model that suits perfectly for a casual racing game (e.g. without Colin MacRay details). It also includes ragdoll-type minigames, where you shoot your driver to the purpose (and to the victory xD). The only problem - is that in the official game you have no multiplayer (with is ultimate fun), only LAN or hotseat for minigames (because gameSpy servers were shut down), BUT there are mods that can add this functionality too. IMO its a top5 of all racing games I ever played (25+ years, started from first NFS:Hot pursuit - e.g. before 1st Undergroud)
