It's boring. There's seriously too much talking. Which ate up probably 7 of the 8 hours I played it. The choices you make don't make a difference either. At the start you choose three different storylines, "Streetkid", "Something or other" and "Corpo". Don't think if you choose Corpo you'll get to stay employed at Arasaka and become a company hit man like I did. You lose the job within 10 minutes and spend the rest of the time starting up Avalanche, a rebel group intent on stopping the major corporation you worked for previously... huh. That sounds very familiar to me. No matter what, you wind up in the same place, playing the same storyline. You can choose some different dialogues when talking with important characters but they all lead to the same outcome. It's extremely linear. You are forced to team up with characters you just want to kill instead. I stopped playing after Jackie died (which I guess is the prologue - a prologue that takes 8 hours to complete) because it got too predictable and BORING. Just when you play as Keanu Reeves finally and you're blowing dude's heads off, he gets uploaded to a USB thumb drive (the one you place in your noggin) and MORE TALKING ENSUES. Do yourself a favor and skip it. Just watch a review with the cliff notes, you'll save time and money.
Arguably one of the best early horror games ever made, Alone In the Dark is the first horror game set in a mansion in 3D space. It has awful control mechanics at first but you get used to it rather quickly if you play it more than once. Unlike RE games, you can save anywhere at anytime which is nice so each time you can make it a little farther and discover a little more instead of constantly having to restart at the beginning or at some preconcieved save point. Alone In the Dark might also be the first 3D adventure title to feature two playable characters. Emily Hartwood, niece of Jeremy Hartwood, the owner of Derceto, and Edward Carnby, a private eye who is hired by a local antiques dealer to find a priceless piano that belonged to the Hartwoods. Both characters have their own motives and story but in the end, they both basically play the same. Edward's a bit better at hand-to-hand combat than Emily but that's about it. It's a little wonky and the controls make the original Resident Evil seem like a Call of Duty game but it's definitely playable still to this day if you are interested in it's story. I definitely prefer the first game to 2 and 3 but I recommend you play all of the games in the series if you're a horror game fan.
The absolute best way to play this classic. Before it might have been the 2006 PC DVD-ROM version only released in Japan (thanks to it's super high quality video). But it and all other versions have been surpassed finally by a version that's been modernized and includes ALL bonuses. I just did a stream of Leon's A scenario if you want to see it in action for yourself. I've also done 4th Survivor and Ex Battle. YouTube channel is @velvetpilot2008 . Thank you GoG and Capcom for bringing these classics back to life and on PC!
