Owned the original diskette version for the C64 back in the days, never finished it due issues with my drive... But had hours of fun, enough so that first sought the PC version out as abandonware and have now forked over money to GoG as well. They deserve it! The game is a somewhat simplistic space adventure with light simulation elements. The amount of ships is limited, plot is short... But it is still a mostly enjoyable experience, even if the Bassruti station part can get a bit frustrating. Also, highly recommend reading the in-universe game manual, the novelette and looking at the star maps. While PDF:s don't quite provide the feeling of having the actual physical thing in your hands, this is the sort of extra I like having for RPG/adventure games. =)
Forcing spyware on users? Shady EULA language? I like this style of computer RPG a lot and from what I've heard this is a good game... But I'm not going to buy it even at a significant discount if the devs are known for trying to slip spyware onto their ACTUAL customers, us gamers. I CAN wait for a couple of decades for GoG to purchase the rights to this and re-release it without the DRM, so unless Owlcat really manages to apologize for crud like the aforementioned and rolls spyware and underhanded crap out forever, they better be happy eating whatever money they managed to gather before they got tricksy. At least buying the actual TTRPG enables me to play with whoever I want, however I want, without anyone spying on me or my group. I'll be messaging Paizo Publishing about being more careful who they sell their licences to, and consider cutting Owlcat off if they don't fix their ways. If Owlcat is feeling unfairly judged, they can always give us a list of games, devs and publishers who use this "industry standard" stuff, so everyone'll know to avoid them too!
Have NOT bought this intriguing title yet, but wanted to note that DosBox DOES have controls for CPU cycles, allowing the user to speed up or slow down a game. To slow down emulation speed, decrease cycles by CTRL-F11, to speed up/increase with CTRL-F12. You might want to try the Turbo button ALT-F12, just be careful with it as I've had some games develop glitches when Turboing too often. https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Special_Keys
I've finished the game once in Campaign mode, playing on Ubuntu 16.04, and overall I like the game a lot. I'll start with the negatives to get them out of the way. The game crashes relatively often, during my first campaign it tended to crash to desktop every couple of hours and now during my second it has picked up an annoying habit of replacing those crashes with freezing and requiring a complete reboot of my laptop. If you're easily annoyed or insist on hard-core ironman mode, bear that in mind! I am less analytical of the pros: - Captures nicely exploring the unknown - The challenge starts easy enough, though this might depend on your crew choices - Acquiring gear is fulfilling, as it should be in a good roguelite - I personally like the music and graphical style - It captured my attention immediately and kept it until first playthrough, which to me is always a sign of a good game As for the tips: 1. Save. The game has stability issues, so saving is imperative to avoid frustration! 2. Generators are a good investment, even more so than batteries as they help on return trips. 3. Around Derelict level 5 or so of the campaign, the challenge rises sharply. You can return to old derelicts to grind levels and gear&money for crafting! 4. Eventually, you want LESS cards from your gear. 4-5 good cards are far better than 12 cards with 3 great, 2 good, 3 decent and 4 poor, for example. You can adjust your Occupation skill cards separately, but not your gear. With optimized cards, an encounter that was previously 100% fatal can turn into victory! 5. By Derelict level 5, Evasion starts overpowering HP, Armor and Shields. Not getting hit in the first place is the best defense! 6. Running away is NOT a shame if you think you encountered more than you can deal with. Have fun, and patience with any instabilities you might encounter! ^-^
