It's the timeless classic of the OG Diablo. But compared with even some ARPGs released a few years after Diablo's release it is very bare bones on what you can do in the game. It's still great to play and works flawless on modern systems but the legendary Butcher, which would wipe me out instantly all those years ago I can now destroy easily on my first try. As gamers we are better and the challenge has gone. You likely won't play 1000s of hours of this now but it is comforting to know I can come back to best version of Diablo at any time on my modern system.
For those curious. There are only 2 ways you can play DA:O on PC. Via the EA App on their own launcher. OR buying and downloading the GOG offline launcher for this game. It has to be the offline launcher as well, Galaxy breaks the game somehow. If you have further problems running in an older compatibility mode may fix it. Steam version is straight broken and is never getting fixed. Finally I'm afraid the only real way to play this is to buy a raspberry PI install windows 7/XP on it dump the GOG offline installer on it and then play it off that. It shouldn't be like this and I would hope GOG could support by working with EA to make fixed edition of the game but we will wait and see. I expect you will find a remastered version will release one day too and I eagerly await that day. Outside of all that this game is a masterpiece. Great writing, graphics, world design and combat which easily surpasses the vast majority of RPG's that get released today. It is ultimately worth the effort to play this game at least once.
I started the game however I created a character which could summon a super demon. I foolishly summoned the super demon in the starting zone and I could not outrun it and it would spawn camp me for making such a bad decision. I have learnt my lesson and have made a new character without the ability to summon the spawn camping demon that only really killed me and maybe 1 or 2 grave robbers. A game this could never be made today. A game that truly lets players have control and forces them to learn from mistakes the hard way. A truly fulfilling experience completing this game, would recommend.
The AI is shockingly great for a game this old. Also the insult/taunts from other nations are legendary. If you are playing with friends you can also customise these insults which can result in an angry lizard man calling you slurs. Overall a very fun time killer that plays more like a complex board game than a video game.
Its holds up perfectly graphically, runs great on modern software/hardware and one of the few great WW2 french resistance video games. Also using the offline GOG installer it runs better than the steam version so keep that in mind.
I prefer Swat 4 but this still holds up on its own very easily. If you can forgive some slightly more janky aspects of the game it will still be just as good if not better.
Nobody will ever make games as good as this again. In depth tribe management mechanics with intense battle sims which genuinely make you care about the members of your tribe more than you would expect. One of the evergreen all time greats.
I had forgotten how amazing this game is. It is an absolute classic which is running perfectly on Win 10. There has been nothing even close which been able to capture the pure carnage and cool of this game. This game is from bygone age which there was only rule when designing video games: the rule of cool. And everything from the main character to every small detail of every level is designed to simply be cool in how you annihilate your enemies. A game you have to play and has aged beautifully.
I played around 2017. Tried coming back to the game but they had deleted all my data and cards and forced to start from the beginning. Tutorial is also long and boring. Just play Hearthstone at least they won't delete all your data if you stop playing for a bit.
There is nothing better then loading this game up on a Sunday afternoon. It's so old I could play it on my fridge computer and there is something peaceful and lovely slapping the monsters around in the first game. The same kind of feeling you would get attacking monsters in classic World of Warcraft. Its slow and not filled with cool effects but still feels impactful and fun. It runs perfectly out of the box on Windows 10 M&K, no need for extra patches to download. If you decide to use Galaxy it also has cloud saves which is nice. Guide to add the expansions which is fine but not necessary to enjoy these gems is on the forum. Definately a great game that has survived the test of time.
