Giants: Citizen Kabuto

Fun but difficult

I decided to get this game on GoG because it was one of those games that I remember reading about back in 2000, but never got to play. I've been revisiting old games a lot, usualy to find that memories are best left as memories :-) After playing Giants: Citizen Kabuto half an hour I was pretty sure that this was a bad purchase. The controls are too old school, and your keyboard hand is way overloaded while you only use two buttons on the mouse. The weapons were flimsy and the graphics were kind boring... like the game has a way too low polygon count, even for its time. Due to the lousy save game system I lost my first 2 hours of gameplay. (Note: Do NOT click Start new game... accidently or for fun.. because it will wipe all the save games of the profile.) BUT, I decided to give it another go, and this time I got alot futher into the game. I noticed that the graphics were probably kind of low because the worlds were huge and there was a lot going on. Lots of enemies, destructable buildings etc. The game started to amaze me. You quickly get a lot of new weapons and gear to play with, and the game will enable you to make some rather interesting tactical decisions. Due to not having any real save system (only restart from the beginning of every level) the game is too difficult compared to todays standards. You often end up playing the same level a lot, only to figure out how to avoid certain areas, sneak slowly and snipe everything , and to "expoit" the generous shops that allow you to get all the ammo and health you need. This missing save system is somehow also the strength of the game. Because it forces you to attempt to "solve" each level in different ways. The humor in the game great. It seems a bit misplaced that though both the aliens and the player characters speak cockney english, but it works anyway. The story is like stories are in a computer game.. a little boring.. and filled with misc. reasons why you must do this and that. Definitely worth checking out.
