Diablo + Hellfire

Simply one of the best!

The charm of this game has always been it's simplicity. Yet it has just enough complexity to keep it interesting. You're not going to be overwhelmed creating a character. You only have to pick one of three classes available (four in Hellfire but this review will focus on Diablo single player) and all other attributes are preset. The only decision is do you want a character that specializes in melee (warrior), ranged (rogue) or magical (sorcerer) combat. You're also not limited to any one type of combat no matter what class you choose. You're only limited by your imagination as you progress through the game. You can have success with any character you build if you employ the right combat strategy. This simplicity may not be to your liking if your the type that wants to delve into uber character builds and complex skill trees. However, if you just want to have fun exploring the underworld, killing evil monsters and collecting loot without too much thinking, you will like this game. There is very little lore to the world of Diablo. The story will unfold naturally as you progress through the game. If you prefer a little more lore I suggest taking a few minutes to read the manual for a little more background. If you are one of those people that want to be be a scholar of history of some fantasy realm you will likely be disappointed by the lack of lore. Some may find the history of the game itself alluring. The graphics and game mechanics show their age but are still relevant enough today to be playable. The musical score fits the game perfectly and has lost nothing to age. The randomization built into the game also helps to keep the game fresh and new. If you're a casual gamer that just wants to waste some time hacking and slashing without being overwhelmed with complexities, this game is for you! If you stay awhile and listen you may just make a few new friends in the town of Tristram or a few enemies in the depths of HELL!
