This game captures XCOM almost perfectly, and it basically gives every XCOM fan exactly what we wanted all along, a game that is true to the old XCOM formula, with a fresh coat of paint. Of course that's not to imply that the upgrade is limited to the graphics, the game brings along some new features of it's own and improves on some aspects that were lacking in the old XCOM. First of all, the game now features a class system, which isn't nearly as constricting as the one in XCOM:EU, although it's slightly more shallow as it mostly serves as an equipment preset rather than giving your soldiers more character progression as they develop abilities. Still, the new weapons do alot to inject more strategy into combat, each type of weapon and class having it's own advantages and flaws, it falls to you to use them to the best of your abilities. The game is also(dare I say) more challenging than the original XCOM, the aliens are far more active than they were in the original, and the map has a feature which allows you to see reports of alien activity on the map(even in areas outside your radar range) which makes the struggle against the aliens that much more immersive and overwhelming. All in all it's a great remake of the original XCOM, if you're a fan of the old one you should buy this without hesitation.
This game is absolutely amazing, and I cannot stress that enough. The concept is well executed, combat is fast paced but very strategic the music is great and the quests are fun to do. The random galaxy generation combined with the different varieties of ships allows for almost infinite replay-ability. The one issue with this game is difficulty, due to the fact that the game is a randomly generated rouge-like your progress will generally depend on luck and as such the game can at times be extremely unfair and frustrating, this is especially true during the final boss fight, without giving much away I'll just point out that the boss is extremely overpowered and for the most part requires a very particular set of weapons/upgrades to be beatable. Other than that the game is absolutely amazing and I highly recommend it.
The first time I saw this game was when I bought the UFO trilogy in a store, I hoped it was the sequel to one of my favorite game series, X-COM. seing that it wasn't I nearly threw the game away and only came back to try it again several months later, and lets just say I was really lucky that I didn't throw it away. The game has an interesting story development and a mostly good combat system, it also features diplomacy, which sadly isn't that well developed, there are 3 option in diplomacy, ask for soldiers, give resources and ask for resources, this makes the diplomacy unnecisarrily simplistic, even worse its not at all a realistic exchange, for example you can have maxed out approval of certain faction, ask for resources and it resets, there is NO option for any advanced trading and you cannot trade lands/equipment/technology. also the difficulty has some VERY steep curves, at first you will be fighting retarded reticulans(and I don't mean that as an insult, its actually a plot point that they become mentally impaired) and mutants, then before you know it you will be fighting cultists who are MUCH better equiped than you and will overwhelm you with their numbers. after you manage to win some fights with them, get some of their advanced weapons(machine guns and what not) you'd think you can kick their ass right? WRONG! by the time you get enough proper equipment and well trained soldiers to start exterminating the cultists another alien race appears on earth and heres a surprise, they are again MUCH better equiped than you! and they side with the cultists. I know I wrote more about the cons than the pros about this game but other than these problems the game has some really immersive story line and due to the difficulty it actually becomes really suspencefull. charecter models become more fleshed out making a stronger attachment to your team members, and at the end of the day there is nothing more satisfying than to crush thouse same cultists that used to easily overpower and outnumber you, even if the game eventually gets back at you.
