Cyberpunk 2077

A mess and a masterpiece

Cyberpunk is a game of two halves. On one hand, its a overhyped, underdelivering open world action game, that in no way reaches the marketings lofty promise of being a "next-gen, open world adventure". A game that should never have launched in a state that it did, and is a victim of unfullfiled ambition and unreachable development goals, just as much as a victim of unrealistic hype and delusional expectations from a circlejerking fanbase with zero restraint or reasonability. On the other hand, however, and the reason why i cant not consider this one of the best games ever, its a deeply engrosing, beautifully written, deep, mature and dark story that is faithful to its genre the whole way. The writting in this game, from the characters to world building and main quests to the smallest side jobs is so full on its not only CDPRs best, but also a new industry defining standard that goes toe to toe with the likes of Planescape: Torment, Fallout: New Vegas, and other rpg classics. The stories on offer here hit hard and run deep, offering a look at subjects as numerous as they are bleak, resulting in a wide emotional range that had me busting my ass from laughter at one moment and crying my eyes out the next. And thats where the discrepancy in the public consensus lies. If you are like me, someone who plays rpgs for their stories and characters and isnt bothered by their often less polished gameplay, and who loved CDPRs previous output, warts and all, as well as games like the mass effect trilogy, this game is going to delight and enthrall you like it did me, simply because despite all the broken promises CDPR knocked it out of the park where it counts most. If however, you came here expecting a living breathing world, a Cod level shooter, a crpg level of choices, Cyberpunk has very little to offer you. You may still enjoy it, but i recomment you do so after it has been sufficiently patched. Its a 10 in my eyes, even if i understand that right now, it wont be for most.
