For context, I have played and really liked most RE games but this is my first time playing RE3 specifically and I found it a bit disappointing, especially after really enjoying RE2. To start off, the game is excessively difficult (on hard mode, there's no normal difficulty for some reason) on a first playthrough for a number of reasons. In the first half of the game there's not much ammo compared with the amount of enemies you encounter. You have to avoid most of them which would be ok if not for the fact you have to backtrack a lot and deal with the same enemies so many times. Then there's Nemesis. The amount of ammo you have to use to kill him is ridiculous, which also forces you to use the dodge mechanic which is completely inconsistent and an absolute chore. Then I found out online that the freeze rounds are very effective against him so after that the encounters became trivial. Still, it's annoying how many times you have to fight him and the other boss, sometimes back to back and usually with no warning ahead of time so you can get your inventory ready. Then there are other issues like the graphics, at least character models, being clearly inferior to RE2. The dialogue and voice acting, like previous games, is really bad, but at least the previous ones had the good sense to keep them brief and to the point and not take the storytelling too seriously, which actually gave them some charm, but RE3 has long dialogue scenes and takes itself more seriously storywise which makes it more cringey than charming to be honest. To top it off, there is only one playable character and only one scenario aside from the mercenaries mode which, after you've already completed the game on the hardest mode (only mode without cheats) leaves you with little reason to replay it other than maybe getting a better ranking and a different epilogue screen. All in all, it's still a decent game and I'm glad I played it, but I don't think I'll be replaying it any time soon.
This game is surprisingly playable and fun considering how old it is. The graphics are actually quite pretty in my opinion, plus the music, sound effects and sub-standard voice acting and dialogue give the game a lot of charm and atmosphere. GOG did a great job updating the game. I played with a PS4 controller and it worked very well. Only gripes with it are that it is a bit short compared to more modern Resident Evil games (I finished Claire A on 4 and a half hours for reference.) and that on a first playthrough it can be unforgiving at times (though generally it's not a particularly difficult game if you're used to tank controls). You are surrounded by zombies right from the start when you still haven't got used to the controls and boss fights can catch you by surprise without enough healing items/ammo. Overall, it's great and worth playing by anyone who likes games which can do a bit of everything (action/horror/puzzles) at the same time.
