I think I first tried this game about a decade after it came out and it gripped me immediately. Now I keep coming back to it. It has something about it where you can't put it down because there is always the next thing to make or find. I've been looking for games in the vein of this and there is only one that comes close called Hammerting on Steam. In a better world, this would have created its own sub-genre of Diggleslikes.
I remember playing this game at a friend's house when I was a kid, and the game was retro even back then. I bought it because it's a classic, and not only did it not live up to my memories of it... it's kinda awful, and I'm glad game makers have learned to do better since then. First off, I didn't even know the game had no mouse look (I think it was originally intended to be played with keyboard only!) The vanilla version is practically unplayable, but luckily there are helpful tools out there that upgrade the game's mechanics appropriately. Even so, the game is confusing as hell, there's no leveling or skills, and hardly any story or personality to speak of. The graphics are sweet, though. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to see how far gaming has come overall.
