Worms W.M.D

A return to form, but GOG buyers beware!

As a huge fan of the Worms series, I'm really happy to say that WMD does a superb job of getting back to the slick, responsive gameplay that made Worms: Armageddon such a classic. Kudos to Team 17 for their efforts! The physics and feel of the gameplay are excellent, and any Worms 2 / Armageddon / WWP player will find themselves right at home. Ninja ropes seem to be slightly less affected by gravity but otherwise behave just as you remember them from W:A. Vehicles and buildings - two of the main gimmicks of WMD, and both optional - are well done, though I suspect that some vehicles (especially the tank) have the potential to be somewhat overpowered. Perhaps it's just a case of early days and needing to figure out effective counter-tactics. Crafting is an interesting addition that I've not yet tinkered that much with, but I think it adds a great dimension to the gameplay, giving an extra incentive to go the extra mile for those creates whenever you possibly can and keeping your opponent on your toes when he sees the "Player has crafted something special!" message. WMD doesn't yet have the extreme flexibility of W:A. For example, there's no way to customise weapon chances from crates, only a boolean "on" or "off", and you can't tweak the power of individual weapons. Still, the scheme settings are otherwise comprehensive, and maybe we'll see this expanded in the future. The reason I've put WMD at 4 stars instead of 5 is that right now, there's no cross-platform multiplayer, and sadly the GOG community seems quite small. Hopefully it will grow, but for now it's very hard to find an online match - ranked or unranked. My hope is that Team 17 will prioritise adding cross-platform play with Steam users in the future to solve this problem. If they do, and multiplayer becomes lively, I'll certainly adjust my rating to 5 stars. Until then, if multiplayer is a significant draw for you then be sure you know what you're getting into before buying.
