UnderRail

The Dark Souls of cRPG's

Let's face it. After the tutorial missions the rest of the game feels like clearing Deathclaw and Super Mutant areas in Fallout with an underleveled character. Dying is part of it so play it with that mindset. So long story short, 1) Just shooting your way to victory is almost impossible in your first playthroughs. 2) You must use everything at your disposal if you want to win. A well placed trap/grenade/net, etc can make an encounter from impossible to breeze. 3) The game demands time and attention from you, especially when speaking to people. Many of the game hints are hidden through casual dialogue sequences(Souls style). 4) The whole thing feels like a Labour of love!

Age of Wonders 3

After spending 300+€...

...on various 4x and grand strategy titles, I can safely call Age of Wonders as THE game. 1) The balance between warfare and kingdom management is perfect. 2) 95% of the game mechanics are clean and simple. 3) There is an in game encyclopedia with all kinds of info. Rules, lore, units and building explanations, everything. 4) Beautiful artwork and animations. 5) One of the best random map generating systems ever. 6) There is a subtle role-playing layer above the whole game that makes you care about your units and heroes, even on deciding on how to deal with the various independent towns. 7) The combat systems is clever, quick and deadly. It's perfect.
