...albeit not exactly what I was expecting. But really 5/5 for the athmosphere even if some things aren't always logical. I'd say KONA and FIREWATCH are both excellent and are polar opposites in terms of expectations vs reality of how the story goes. The only minor downside is the loading time between zones, what should be an instant transition sometimes results in more than ten seconds of a ticker going onscreen (and I have a good enough gaming laptop)
General".
...under a different name and it also had its source code bundled, and essentially its quality has not improved - engine errors, PC grinding to a halt, unpredictable interactions with trucks - all of that is still true nowadays. Great idea, poor execution, because the developer probably lost interest midways, which is justifiable , considering it's an updated, dynamic version of the early-90ies SKYROADS classic.
I have played it for 14 hours, hurting myself in the process and I can't recommend it, sorry. The good things: - The story makes sense - Everything is recyclable into useful resources - Everything is craftable The bad things: - Everything takes too much time - Crafting makes little sense - I built a WOODEN shelter on a radioactive planet and was okay? WUT? - If you go blind and select Permadeath, you're gonna die. I mean, I guess it's like real world, but the planet you land on is totally random, so if you land LIKE ME, on a TOXIC RADIOACTIVE PLANET WITH PREDATORY FAUNA However, the worst is yet to come: Gamebreaking flaws follow: 1 - Not everything is recyclable into useful resources - let me explain here - if you are a game developer and you make world objects in a game where you can mine and convert the landscape YOU BETTER F_____G MAKE THOSE WORLD OBJECTS DESTRUCTIBLE AND RECYCLABLE AS WELL - this, by the way is an unforgivable flaw in the light of the insane mechanic of attribution/connection with nanites 2 - all objects like factories, ruins, outposts, crashed freighters are impermanent and leave no trace of their existence (go ahead, leave a navigation marker or even a save point there). It would have been okay if those objects were destructible, like I mentioned before, in a game with a supposedly "persistent world" it's just playing peekaboo with an adult player, which is insane and insulting to the intelligence 3 - non-permanent usable item duplication - by that I mean, the crashed ship I have found in the second part of the (20 or so HOURS-LONG) tutorial, which is connected, duplicated, and in addition to having repaired the original second ship, I was now offered, nay, required to repair the third "crashed ship" all over again, which had me pixel hunting over the hull to find how to enter my original, repaired crashed ship. 4 - cannot sell the ship for scrap, because can't unequip technology because "wrong type of slot". I know game, I know 1.5/5
Having grown with the Sami lore - another arctic First Nation, in an environment where this lore was widespread and celebrated, I can't recommend buying this game. I love the narration and the videos, my wife loves the narration and the videos, but this all comes on top of a very poorly developed game, with a questionable degree of control, which doesn't let you skip combat or platforming scenes no matter how many times you have failed them. I've counted at least 3 instances where we were forced to repeat a segment 30+ times, due to buggy wall scaling/clipping. In addition to that most intersticial historical text is aliased and thus is completely unreadable. This does a disservice to an otherwise interesting story.
The graphics and the animations are good. The gameplay concept isn't interesting enough to retain your attention for the game to be replayable. The negatives: - Too much fragile objects in the game that you have to defend - the entire game is an endless turn-based tactical escort mission - Enemies are too buff - The teams (three that I have) are made of wet paper bags - Why introduce a pilot mechanic if they die like flies - The islands look almost exactly similar and provide no tangible interest/environmental mechanics to bring more interest to play, and more importantly - don't allow you to use the environment against your enemy, which is a failure for a game which declares and sets out to do just that - "active environment to defeat the enemy" Positives: the same above points, for the masochists. Overal, not worth the purchase, unless deeply discounted. Much worse and much less replayable than FTL.
An updated take on a classical nonsensical quest genre, which is + Furry (yay!) + Pleasant to look at and listen to + Relaxing and doesn't have time pressure or unforgiving choices making you restart the game and + General lack of killjoy moralizing and "grittiness" The negatives? See above, for those who dislike the game. Me? I'm probably subscribing to the studio's patreon to see the game through!
... by literally reproducing the downsides of 80ies scrollers by having not enough save points, but this sorry excuse for a game doesn't even play consistently from one screen to another, doesn't respond to the controls, changes the sprites randomly, contains random, unexplained narration (for the writers - you don't put a person in the middle of your fictional world, unless the world's consistent and consistently explained - which is neither for this game), the constant nagging of the NPCs and the unremovable dialogs, the annoying "pseudo-athmospheric" music. Everything in this game is a cash grab for the nostalgia bucks, and boy am I glad I got this for a discount and not for the full 8.99 euro price, because this "game" s not worth ANY of the money. 90% of Newgrounds flash games from 2005-2015 are better made and have a better non-cringe inducing *(with the dog spirit) story.
