Don't listen to those people crying about difficulty and blind choices! There's just SO much for new players to learn. Also, the difficulty settings are poorly labeled. The game says Easy and Normal when it should say Normal and Hard. The only reason I can't give this five stars is because of the absurd randomness. Had many encounters where I was vastly superior to my enemy but all my shots would miss. Then I'm searching forever for a store the game never gives me. Everything else in this game is simply perfect. The art assets are gorgeous, the sounds are perfect and most of the music was so good I would just sit and listen. I often found myself wanting to explore so I could read more about the factions and races. There's 9 ships total each with an alternate layout. There's 7 races to collect as crew for your ship. Not so many achievements but hundreds of weapons, ship mods and upgrades. If that's not enough FTL also has a very active modding community. Please don't think I'm being biased. I actually HATE rogue-like games with a passion and kind of felt the same about FTL at first. But after logging 187 hours I can already tell this will be a game that I'll be coming back to again and again for years to come. And for 10 bucks, what more could you really ask for?
This game is super hard and will kill you a lot when you first start playing it. It has structured crafting which is great. You'll see the things you can craft and what you need to craft them but you have to research most of them first. The title is very appropriate. Despite all the enemies and various hazards hunger is your biggest enemy. It can be hard to find a reliable food source and even when you do, you'll have to keep your food from spoiling. There are different characters with different traits to play and the worlds are proceedurally generated so there's tons of replay value here. Not a game for anyone who prefers a more guided experience. But for anyone who likes to sandbox it up a bit, it is worth every penny. Also important to note that the game gets frequent updates and the developers listen to their fans.
I played this when it was new and I can say, anyone who says it's worth five stars is on a nostalgia trip. The game, at it's core, is solid and rewarding. Upgrades feel good and progress makes you wanna keep playing but it is just SO hard to go back and play this again. The controls feel really awkward to say the least and it can be REALLY easy to get lost during a fire fight. I played the very first one more recently and I died more by crashing into walls than I did from enemies. There's something to be said for this style of gameplay but the first two installments lack a LOT of polish. If you think you might like this sort of gameplay just get Descent 3. It's better in every aspect. This is more like a time capsule than an actually enjoyable gaming experience. Fun to laugh at and show the kiddies but ultimately, very unplayable.

I played this game back when it first came out and just couldn't force myself to keep playing. You can really tell the developers loved Dungeons & Dragons but had only that going for them. The races and classes are well fleshed out but then the story is cheesy like a Saturday morning cartoon show. It has really solid and balanced rts gameplay but then the campaign has you simply walking from one objective straight to the other with zero strategic implementation. It's kind of sad, actually. There's a hint of something amazing here but it ultimately falls short.
As an old school Dungeons & Dragons player I have seen very few video games that captured Gary Gygax's vision of a living world. Neverwinter Nights does exactly that. Character creation is extremely verbose and all your stats have relevance within the game beyond fighting things. Characters with low intelligence have fewer dialogue options, certain traps or puzzles can be defeated by having a high enough dexterity modifier and, NPCs will often be more friendly to characters with a high charisma score. These are only a few examples. It's also important to note that the community for this game is still very much alive and kicking. The game has a sort of server browsing feature much like Valve games and there are still lots of server listings. At it's core the game was created to be almost like a creation tool as well. It has a built in campaign designer with a programming language. There is an encyclopedic amount of monsters, rooms, characters, equipment, spells and abilities to utilize. This is also discounting the fact that you can craft your own anything. Needless to say this is a MUST HAVE for anyone who likes fantasy rpg even a little. Even if you can't figure out how to make your own adventures there are countless adventure campaigns for download on the internet. Many of which are even better than the ones that come with the game.
This title is a perfect example of art direction and gameplay focus union that you simply will not see in games anymore. There are several factions in the game and each one has its own singleplayer campaign to playthrough. Each one seems very dedicated to teaching you how to use the units in that faction. Once you've settled into a faction you like, you'll find the multiplayer is the meat of the game. The modes of gameplay few in comparison to more recent titles but are all extremely valid and engaging in their own rights. Nothing in this game seems forced at all and it's a smooth experience the whole way through. Sacrifice can have a steep learning curve depending on what faction you settle into playing but, if you can get past that, you will find a game worth playing for years. I still have the disc sitting on my desk, with all my other favorites.
I got this some years ago when the gold edition first hit the shelves. It has surprising graphics for its age and some very unique gameplay. Most RTS games almost require that you build and attack quickly. This game seems a little more focused on building your infrastructure properly and you really get the feeling that you're at the command of an actual army. The contest is to see who can manage their army the best and make good use of tactics instead of just who can get a group of shock troops into the enemy base first. This is really a joy to play with friends over a network and can take span hours of gameplay on just one map. If you liked Age of Empires you'll love this.
I would seriously like to know who all these people are that make the majority of reviews on this site. I see a lot of games getting five stars and flawless review comments when they really aren't that good. I love tycoon games and I thought this game was just not very good. It's interesting at first, but it is stupidly slow paced, does a bad job at showing you how to play and the interface drove me nuts. If you can get past these or if all you care about is the story, then maybe this is a game for you. Can't complain at these prices, but it's far from being a five star game.
