Black Mirror

wasd

Not being able to rebind the keys deserves one star for modern games in any case, but added to that, being able to pick your own keybinds is a disability issue. As someone who can't use wasd at all, I'd give negative stars if I could. It's so much more than just a matter of convenience.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

Most horrible save system ever

It only has autosave. I played for 15 minutes or so and got quite a bit done. Then I had to quit the game. It warned me that progress after the last auto-save would be lost. 'Fine,' I thought, 'I've been playing for a while now, how much progress could I lose?' There was no indication of it, in any case. I made sure to have done something significant before quitting, just in case. That generally triggers an autosave in the games I've played that use them. When I started the game again I was right at the beginning. In Psychonauts 2, which also uses autosave, I hardly ever lost more than seconds and the most I ever lost was 2 minutes of play. It also warned me upon quitting how much playtime I'd be losing if I went through with it.

The Whispered World: Special Edition

Great concept

I like the game in principle. The graphics look beautiful, story seems great, and I could even put up with Sadwick's voice (annoying or just bad voice-acting is, unfortunately, sort of an adventure staple). I enjoyed much of the commentary from the characters and really felt immersed in the atmosphere of the game and each scene. The puzzles, however, are... not great. Some are of the "makes-no-sense-whatsoever" variety, and a glib comment from the character doesn't really make that any better or funny. The rest is too often overly intricate. Not complex (I could figure out what to do), but requiring too many small steps that make you wonder why they didn't just make half of them automatic/implied, and requiring far too much walking back and forth (and navigation isn't always easy in this game to begin with. Furthermore, while Sadwick can auto-travel to a new area by double-clicking, that won't make him travel any faster within an area). The idea of the transforming Spot is also nice, and I've seen many good uses for it, but it also seemed like they had to put it in the game a certain number of times or something and a lot of them seem redundant and illogical as well.

Runaway: A Road Adventure

A good try

As far as (most) fairly recent adventure games go, this is a nice one. It lacks a certain something to make it great, but was enjoyable to play. If you like adventure games in general, you will probably like playing this. I did find the voice acting to be quite a bit less than what it could be. Some of the voices and characters that were obviously meant to be funny, were only annoying to me. I liked the atmosphere.
