I initially played this game back when I was a toddler in the 90s, so I feared that I may be blinded with nostalgia. However! The game is actually great! Mind you though, I was definetly too young to play it back then, this game is way more adult than I remembered it to be. Something something "all cartoons are for children" mentality of the 90s.
I honestly wasn't very hyped for this game, given that Pillars of Eternity was "just" good and not great. Tyranny is awesome. the shorter playtime and smaller size is exactly what a game like this needs, everything about this game is quality over quantity, which helps immensely with the replay value. THE GOOD: + Original setting (late bronze age meets fantasy) + Interesting and diverse cast of companions who all have their own agendas and don't just follow along because they can. + Rich lore and world building + Improved battle system (introducing combo abilities) + Stylized visual design (yay for not looking like every other game in the genre) + High replay value! + Narrative focus with just the right amount of combat + Amazing sense humor. Seriously. + Incredibly tightly written dialouges. Rarely have I found myself be this enganged by an old man babbling about history all day long. THE BAD: - A *few* occassions where loose ends are dropped - Backgrounds could have been more colourful (most areas are way too brown) - Rather inconclusive ending (I am gonna assume there is going to be an expansion at some point) THE INTERESTING: * Even though this game features no romances (like for example Baldur's Gate 2 and Dragon Age) the characters in this world are clearly not asexual. Companions flirt with each other, NPCs and even your protagonist. * Very adult themes beyond sex and violence, such as racism, sexism, etc. * Lots of diversity in regards of character's looks and sexualities. The key character in the story (next to the protagonist) has no clear gender and is both referred to as male and female.
