Ape Out is a good game that left a sour taste in my mouth, so I decided to drop it. Best played on a controller for the fluid maneuverability, the frenetic soundtrack and visceral CRUNCH as you turn your captors into red paste makes Ape Out incredible to play in the moment. If this was all I had to base the game on, I would give it 5 stars. However, the final missions of the game at the shipping docks alter the difficulty to an un-fun degree. Whereas before I was tearing through skyscrapers and rampaging through terrorist-infested jungles, this shipping dock filled with highly-accurate, one-hit-kill enemies ground my joy to a halt. Instead of mowing through throngs of foolish humans, I had to turn to stealth tactics, AFEARED of those who I once smushed into gibblets. The soundtrack is still telling me to GO WILD but doing so only leads to death after frustrating death. The level layouts are also semi-random so there is no puzzle pattern to learn. It started to feel like my progress was based on the luck of what enemies I would run into more than skill. Ultimately, I decided it wasn't fun anymore, so I uninstalled without completing the final area. TLDR; A fun first three areas, then the game slips on a banana peel trying to increase the difficulty in the fourth.
