This was rough, but I'm glad I did it. It felt like the developers had some kind of frustration or vendetta to work out on their players. The levels seemingly went on longer than Doom 1's levels. And there were lots more monster closets and tight spaces you thought were clear. It really asks the player to step up their game. I played this back when it was new, but I used cheat codes all the way through. I'm glad I went back to finish it and get a more authentic experience. I played this right after finishing Doom 1 for the first time, w/o cheats, and you can see the developers' talents increase along the way. Levels get more creative, abstract, and challenging. I stopped questioning aesthetics and geometric sensibilities and just had to face the reality of the world that was in front of me. Somehow the severe abstract levels pulled me in more than something more realistic and sensible would have. Boiling it down, go play Doom 1 and then follow it up with Doom 2. It's a fascinating and difficult journey that I wager you'd be glad you took.
