The Journeyman Project 1: Pegasus Prime

Great game - even without nostalgia!

Just played through the game for the very first time today and it was an absolute blast. The story was exciting, the characters were acted very convincingly and the locations you visit were very atmospheric. I must admit I'd never played a Journeyman Project game before, even though I own all four PC titles in their original big boxes (JMP, JMP Turbo, Buried in Time and Legacy of Time). It was about time I actually played through the first one. Now I'm all excited to dive into the second game in the series. So I don't have any nostalgia goggles, and still this was one of the best games I've played through this year. It's filled with exciting interactive cinematics that really manage to deeply immerse you. If you're into futuristic science-fiction settings, time travel stories, and maybe first-person adventures as well, this one should be high on your "to play next" list. (My personal favorites in this genre are Starship Titanic, Obsidian, Zork Nemesis and Myst III: Exile - and the latter was also developed by Presto Studios, just like Pegasus Prime.) Playing through the game (with a score of 488 out of 500 points) took me about 6 hours and I couldn't stop playing until I was through. A thoroughly enjoyable experience! Two thumbs up, way up!

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series

This is not a game.

I don't get how there's actually people who call this a GAME! There are always 3 dialogue options and the option to say nothing, always with the usual "he/she will remember that". No matter what you choose, the story moves along the same way anyway. Cinematic sequence, then "now press the button displayed on screen in order to perform the only action that's possible in order to continue the cinematic sequence". Cinematic sequence continues. Then: "now press this button as quickly as possible to continue the cinematic sequence – well done! Good doggy!" Seriously? You can easily simulate this "experience" by watching a YouTube video, pausing it and then clicking play again in order to continue watching. Then there's a little more "action": You may look left or right to find the ONE hotspot that let's you go on with the plot. Ooooh! So much gameplay, I might faint! Then you can control the protagonist, but there's only one correct thing to interact with (and you only need to click it; no puzzle solving here, folks), and that's just another small delay in the predetermined story. "Find the one thing in this room you need to click on in order to keep watching the story." Nothing more. The fact that the "humor" in this game is unfunny and uncharismatic and doesn't manage to even remotely deliver the wit of "Guardians of the Galaxy", but instead feels like cringworthy fanfiction, is another nail in the coffin. Even the songs our hero listens to on his Walkman are unbearably annoying and don't come close to the true "Guardians" atmosphere. Another one of those coffin nails. How can people even develop something like this?? It's no better than those "free-to-play" mobile games that practically play themselves. A perfect contender for "better watch this on YouTube". This way, at least you don't have to do those unspeakably tedious button promts. Ridiculous. A real shame. As a "Guardians" fan, I'd been looking forward to this game. Turns out this just isn't a game.

Megaquarium

Perfect for Bullfrog "Theme" games fans

2018 seems to be a great year for fans of the old Bullfrog "Theme" classics. First we got "Two Point Hospital" by Two Point Studios, which turned out to be the perfect game for fans of the old "Theme Hospital", and now there's "Megaquarium". Why this is relevant? Well, back in the day, after the success of "Theme Park" and "Theme Hospital", there was a third game in the making, which would have been called "Theme Aquarium". It was made by Electronic Arts Square, K.K. and the Japanese company Tose Co. Ltd. (Electronic Arts Square, K.K. was a collaboration of EA (70%) and Square (30%), but when Square merged with Enix in 2003, EA bought back the remaining 30% from Square.) Shintaro Kanaoya, who worked at Bullfrog from 1997 to 1999 (being the lead designer of "Dungeon Keeper 2", for example) said in an interview that "Theme Aquarium" was completely made by Tose and didn't have anything to do with Bullfrog – except for the fact that management used Bullfrog's "Theme" brand. (The "Theme" brand was successful in Japan, so EA were very eager to use that name.) In the end, "Theme Aquarium" was made exclusively for Playstation and wasn't considered good enough to be released as a Bullfrog "Theme" game outside of Japan. The Windows port of the game only happened two years later, in 2000. The "Theme" title was scrapped, the Bullfrog logo removed, the game's logo redesigned, and the game was released as "Aquarium" on the western market. And let me tell you... it REALLY wasn't a good game. The controls were awful and the menus were ridiculously nested and convoluted. The whole thing SCREAMED "console port". (The screen for negotiating wages was reused from "Theme Park", by the way.) It was a complete mess. But rejoice!! "Megaquarium" is here and THIS is the real "Theme Aquarium" we've all been waiting for! It's relaxing, it's fun, it's intuitive! If you want a good old colorful management sim, this is it!! I don't have any gripes at all. Thank you so much, Twice Circled!!

Unavowed Soundtrack

AMAZING Soundtrack! That said...

... I don't really get the pricing. If you buy the game via Humble Store, you get the game DRM-free PLUS a Steam key PLUS the soundtrack. For $14.99, the same price as the base game (without the soundtrack) here on GOG. (Same on Steam, by the way. Need to buy the soundtrack separately on there, too.) Having said that, this soundtrack is absolutely amazing. If you even liked the Blackwell soundtracks just a teeny tiny little bit, then you will LOVE this one. Thomas Regin really outdid himself here! One of the best parts of the game, really.

Mary Skelter: Nightmares

Very good dungeon crawler

If you have a soft spot for first-person dungeon crawlers with single-step movement, 90-degree turns and turn-based combat (as in the Etrian Odyssey series, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey or Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers), this one will definitely be right up your alley. The labyrinth you're traversing is divided into several districts, which are also interconnected, so that there's a big and quite varied world. Characters in this game are mostly girls that are based on characters from folklore and fairytales. Apart from the protagonist, there are Alice (from Wonderland), Gretel (from Hansel and Gretel), Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Thumbelina, Rapunzel, Kaguya from Japanese culture, and Cinderella – though they are depicted as some kind of "American McGee anime versions", if you know what I mean. They are living in a stylized nightmare world called "Jail", which is alive and holds its residents imprisoned. The enemies are quite varied and imaginative and there are some really creepy bosses, too. The soundtrack is very good as well! All in all, I'd recommend this game to every first-person dungeon crawler fan out there. Give it a shot if you already like what you see on these screenshots. You're in for a treat!

Escape from Monkey Island™

Nostalgia is deceiving sometimes.

Yup. Nostalgia makes people forget just how disappointing this game really is. Yeah, it's colorful, some jokes are pretty funny, the music is nice and some people might have a soft spot for this game. Back in the day, Escape from Monkey Island almost managed to destroy the whole Monkey Island universe singlehandedly. It turned what was essentially a humorous swashbuckling pirate game series into something that felt like being trapped in a contemporary holiday tourist trap filled with pop culture references, references to franchises (such as Starbucks) and so on. Yeah, that's an integral part of the plot, I get that, but nothing in this game feels like it has anything to do with Monkey Island anymore. You get "adventurous", "dashing" tasks such as talking to lawyers, getting paperwork in order to prevent somebody from tearing down a mansion, going to school, acquiring office job contracts, ... should I continue? Here's what my first 15 minutes with the game were like, when I tried to play it again recently. Enjoy: [00:00] Great. The Monkey Island logo and the song that's taken directly from Curse of Monkey Island. And we get a really embarassingly bad slideshow of closeups of the rendered ship, just like it's a bad PowerPoint presentation. The credits in some standard Windows font all over that slideshow look as if the devs weren't even trying. [00:01] Okay, NOW we're getting the intro. It's okay. Why Elaine uppercuts Guybrush four times, I'll never know though. That clearly never happened. [00:03] Damn, those are some REALLY bad character models... Did the devs try to copy the original 1992 Alone in the Dark? [00:04] The controls are messed up. Cycling through the commands with PageUp/PageDown, using stuff with the U key, picking stuff up with P and so on. Takes a lot of getting used to. [00:07] Guybrush says "Hey, it's Timmy the monkey! How are you, boy?" – Who the hell is Timmy the monkey supposed to be? Could he be the one from Monkey Island 1 from the jungle? Or one of the countless monkeys from Monkey Island 3? Whatever... [00:09] Greeeeat... in this PIRATE adventure, your first task is to search for some lawyers and start debating with them. Already don't feel like it. [00:11] WHAAAAT??! The chapter splash screens are so pathetically BAD! They can't be serious! [00:12] Those walking/running controls are ridiculous. Guybrush runs into obstacles all the time, turns around and runs the other way. [00:14] How could they design Mêlée Island SO WRONG?? The whole street with the jailhouse, the church and the merchant are GONE! That was one of the places in Monkey Island 1 players visited most frequently! Where is it? No. This is not Mêlée Island. I'm sorry. [00:15] Yeah great. Thanks. EACH and every last person on the island is absolutely mean and obnoxious towards Guybrush (and as such towards you as the player). You just don't feel home on good old Mêlée Island at all! Instead, you feel like a hated stranger being treated like garbage. What on Earth was the point of that? Just imagine, people... Imagine some developer (Ron Gilbert would be perfect, of course) would get permission to make a new Monkey Island game, in which the player would re-visit Mêlée Island. How incredibly beautiful it would be to once again walk across that island which we spent so much time in our childhood exploring. It would be a wonderful, amazing, SPECIAL experience. Everything would be authentic and just as we recall it, so we would be deeply moved – and all that in wonderful, hand-drawn 2D (or really beautiful and detailled 3D) graphics. Seriously... the world would be crazy about something like that. Imagining this made me realize that Escape from Monkey Island COULD HAVE BEEN this special experience even back then! How could the developers choose to change these iconic locations, so that the fans struggle to recognize or even IMAGINE that it's THE Mêlée Island? How is THAT a better idea than to really put some blood, sweat and tears in it to let Mêlée Island shine in new splendor? I will never grasp what the developers were thinking back when they made this game.

Ignition

Great game, but keep in mind...

... that this is merely the DOS version of the game, running in DOSBox. It doesn't feature 3dfx, either. So if you're expecting the Windows version in all its glory, you're in for a disappointment. That said, if you haven't played "Ignition" (a.k.a. "Bleifuss Fun" a.k.a. "Fun Tracks") yet, and you're a fan of fun RC car racing games, you've clearly been missing out. This game is a MUST!
