Before there was 'Pillars of Eternity', my favorite video games were Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter, Icewind Dale II, Planescape: Torment, Eye of the Beholder, Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon, Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos and similar fare. Perhaps the odd Elder Scrolls title, a few fantasy MMOs and a couple of Star Wars games. If you find yourself nodding and agreeing with this list, click the Buy button now. Pillars of Eternity is more than I hoped for. At first I was a little underwhelmed, but I soon found myself drooling at the goodness of it all. Heck, I think it's already my favorite game ever and there is still much to explore and enjoy. It takes the adventurous spirit of the original Baldur's Gate, marries it to the dialogue and detailed descriptions of Planescape: Torment, and becomes its own entity with its own ruleset and its own setting. I'm giving it five stars but I do have a few complaints as well: Lots of bugs from the get-go, some more troublesome than others, and a few gameplay mechanics are too easy (crafting, the Stash)- but the game has many difficulty modes modifying this, I have only played Normal (so far) but I am already itching to create the next main character ;-) Here's to many more games in a new exciting franchise.
