There I am managing my peaceful Dungeon when Boom! A group of miscreants invade my dungeon and start killing my Minions! This, (and the even better Dungeon Keeper 2), are a great take on dungeons. As everyone else has pointed out, ALT +R will switch from 320x240 to 640x480 resolution. The game gets much harder as you progress through the Scenarios. I recommend doing multiple saves through each game. This is a simulation/RTS style game. The price is right and it is very entertaining!
This is the best of the series. Warlord 2 Deluxe would be a great place to start, but Warlords 3 is the best. If you like turn based strategy, you must try this. ( It is dirt cheap too). Easy to learn and great replay value. Highly recommended!
Start with Warlords 2 Deluxe. Warlords 1 is great, but Warlords 2 deluxe is better in every respect. The games can last a long time, but you can save at almost anytime, (you can't save during a battle). This is one of my favorite games. This is Turn Based goodness. Give it a try! You will be pleasantly surprised. Also it is very inexpensive. I could not play it for many, many years because the DOS setup on it made it almost impossible to play on a newer computer. Thank God, GOG released it and now I am playing it again.
This is a fun game when playing the computer but is basically a stalemate when playing against other very experienced players. Going from the Original Total Annihilation to this was a huge step Down. We were thrilled when it came out! Then sorely disappointed. I had the same experience when first playing my friend head to head, then a week later playing my Brother head to head. After several hours of deadlock, My friend announced, " I don't want to play this anymore". A week later same thing.. my Brother said the same thing. That was new for all of us. ( I was thinking the same thing as the game lingered on. I was being polite to my guests...they were right). If your new to these games you might have a different experience. Do Not judge the original based on this sequel and its expansion. Total Annihilation Commander Pack is a steal at the price you can get it for on GOG. Just buy it! TA Kingdoms was a huge misstep for the designers. ( The theory was "Less is Better", but it failed.
Total Annihilation is a 3D RTS made many years ago. On the single player screen type *x, (as in Asterix and X), that will enable 10 players total. You can assign all 9 of the computer opponents to be on the same team. This will make for some Epic skirmishes. Also look online and use a Hex Editor to increase the maximum number of units to several thousand. When the game first came out, the computers of that era could not handle that many units. A few years later the computers could easily handle thousands. Do the tutorials and play the main campaign. This will vastly increase your skills. This is a fantastic game for head to head with your friends on your home LAN. (We usually ban the long range weapons and Nukes..... but we always build them because someone always gets froggy and builds them anyway). I have played so many RTS games, but this is still my favorite!
Star Control 1 was made by Paul Reiche III. He was part of the team that made the Classics Archon and Archon 2 Adept. Star Control 1 was basically a Space Ship version of Archon. (All three games were fantastic). Star Control 2 was primarily an Adventure / Action game. You explore space and learn about the history of your part of space. There are many aliens to meet and very good story telling. When you run into a conflict with other space ships, you fight it out in an arcade style top down view. (just like in Star Control 1 and the Archon games). The story line is very cool and the original boxed version of the game came with a huge map. (which was also used for the copy protection!... GOG is the coolest, no copy protection to slow you down). Star Control 2 is one of the best games ever produced. Yes the graphics are from several decades past, but they work and the plot/game play is what holds up. Just buy it! End of line.... (MCP Tron).
This is my favorite of the HOMM series. It includes a Random map generation and you can find several Mod Programs on the Web. The Graphics and Sound are very functional. They have aged a bit, but they still work fine. The game play is turned based strategy with upgradable cities and buildings in the cities. When you actually go into battle, you are at a tactical level of play on a battle ground or in a siege situation. You will have to carefully choose attacks, order of attacks, repositioning you troops and using Support from you Hero. The tactics you use are critical. Save your games often on different slots. (You might have made a serious mistake). Use the tutorial if your new to the game or if your old and can't remember the finer points of the interface. When you first play the game an opening video will play. You will have to wait for it to finish. Once you watch it once, the next time you open the game, you can escape out the video with the ESC key or click the mouse. (There were issues in the past with it always playing the total video every time you opened it, but i believe it is patched. If you have issues with this, go to the GOG Forums. They have lots of ideas). HOMM 3, is my favorite of the HOMM Series. There a collection of stand alone campaigns on GOG that are based on HOMM3. They are the "Heroes Chronicles Complete". Like others have said, it is very, very replayable with the Random Generators and Map Editors and all the extras available on 3rd party sites of the Web. Play on Heroes! Sluggo
