Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut

Well worth the wait

When Funcom set us on the path that continued the story of The Longest Journey with Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, they gave us a game that despite some flaws left us with an amazing but unfinished story. Many years without that sequel went by. Until now. Dreamfall Chapters takes off where its predecessor ended. Almost immediately numerous questions that arose with the ending of Dreamfall are answered in the first chapter of this sequel. But it is also a very interesting game for those who haven't played the previous games. Granted, you will miss out on a lot when it comes to the preceding story that has led to the current situation and the summary that is given ingame doesn't come close to that story's awesomeness, but there is a lot of good in there for the Dreamfall newbies too. First of all: the voice acting. Adventure games these days depend in large part on proper voice acting and the voice acting in this game easily surpasses that of many games, especially considering that this game is being made by an independant developer. The graphics are also very good. Earlier in the development process I sometimes got a bit worried by the look of the graphics, but Red Thread has delivered: the worlds in which you move around look amazing. And then there is of course the gameplay. Granted, this first chapter feels a lot like an introduction, and in many ways it is, which means that tasks are pretty simple, but you actually feel like you are working towards goals. But one of the most amazing things is the dialogue and choice system. A character will give his or her opinion about a possible choice in dialogue before you click on that choice and decisions that you make in the game will have an effect on the development of the story. At least one consequence of a choice you make comes by in this chapter, which makes you want to replay the game as soon as you're done. This first chapter makes for an awesome opening to what no doubt will be an epic adventure game.
