Resident Evil

Still today a great game

I started playing this game a few years ago, and it was my first experience with tank controls or a game of this style. I’ll admit, I played it on Easy mode, but that didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying it. Even today, this game holds up remarkably well. The gameplay is smooth, and it runs reliably without crashing (though it can freeze if you tab out for too long—playing in fullscreen might fix that). It even supports controllers, which is a nice touch. That said, I wish this version included more features, like the Arranged Mode from the Director’s Cut. Since this is a direct port of the old Windows version, it’s the most barebones edition of the game, missing many of the updates and changes from other ports. In its current state, the MediaKite version with the Rebirth Patch offers a more feature-rich experience. Still, I appreciate GOG’s effort in bringing this classic back, and I’m happy to support it to show my love for the game. The atmosphere in this game is incredible, backed by a fantastic soundtrack. Even with the tank controls, it plays surprisingly well. The story is engaging, and the cheesy voice acting adds a lot of charm. I first played this game in 2020 on a PS1, and I was instantly hooked. If you’re unsure about tank controls, I’d still recommend giving it a try—it’s only €9.99 and remains a masterpiece that helped shape the horror genre. For newcomers, I’d suggest starting with Jill’s campaign—it’s easier than Chris’s, and she doesn’t require ink ribbons for the first playthrough. Also, don’t skimp on saving on more savestates than one; I learned that lesson the hard way. So, if you’re on the fence, go for it. It’s an incredible game worth experiencing.
