Амнезия: Призрак прошлого

A very involving horror game

Amnesia is a really good game, that's no secret. The audio design is very powerful and drives the horror element well. Having to manipulate objects like doors with mouse movements yourself feels very involving and helps to create a panicked feel when chased by monsters, and safe rooms really give you relief. Let this stop no-one from buying this jewel of a game - but, the only thing that bothered me a little was that you start to lose sanity _immediately_ after stepping into the slightest darkness. It feels too instant and game-like. You actually have to run and rush past unlit stretches between wall torches. Minor gripe though. Go Frictional Games!

Deus Ex™ GOTY Edition

Flawless design

Many games claim that you have choices to make, multiple ways into the building and so on. But in Deus Ex, you really do. The number of alternative entrances, ventilation ducts, secret doors and hidden keypad locks is astonishing, giving you a real sense of finding your own way in and out. There's a perfectly balanced feeling of "DYI game experience" and taking part in a thrilling, excellently woven story.

Cryostasis

Philosophic Survival Horror

The "Mental Echo" isn't even the coolest thing about Cryostasis. Cryostasis is a very deep and psychological story, and players with interests to deep things and philosophic content will like this game. The grotesque enemies, whose identity and personality is one of the game's mysteries, have elements in their appearance reflecting their worst fears, referencing to their recent lives on the ship. The story uses symbolism and metaphors, and the maturity of it is like a well respected novel. The conversations and dialogue have a realistic feel and you really begin to involve your mind in the story, speculating on characters' motives and identities. It took me a lot of toothgrinding to get through this game at times, because the technical aspect is rather awkward. But I hope every horror fan out there gives this game a chance, because this game really is "something else" under its crude visage.

Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone

Geeky and average

The best thing about this game for me is the combat and levels, which can be fun from time to time. But almost everything else has an average-ish "B" feeling. One of the most geeky and immersion-breaking details about this game is that the party members refer to each other by class name ("rogue", "warrior" etc...) It's like they aren't really the characters, but a bunch of people LARPing. :D This game looks better in screenshots than it really is. A weak console port as it is, the whole game has a pretty awful "low resolution" presentation all around. The characters look alright, but the menus and everything else, argh. Demon Stone really wouldn't have to be D&D in my opinion. "Feats" are just special abilities like any other game. The fact that all these general ideas and abilities are called Feats kinda makes them seem pretentious because it is a very straightforward hack'n'slash experience, without the usual D&D depth. For the price, it's not bad, but if you have other options, I really see no point in playing this game unless you absolutely want a FR/D&D environment.
