After years of seeing nostalgia laden praise from people describing it as basically "Resident Evil with Dinosaurs," I was excited to see it release on GOG. The game has a somewhat enjoyable cheesy B Movie plot and script, with some amusing banter between characters delivered in the classic Capcom way. Unfortunately, the story is where the good ends. I found the gameplay to be a mostly frustrating experience with a borderline useless map, annoying enemy encounters, and esoteric, unintuitive puzzles. There is no way to view files you've read before from the menu, which can lead to a frustrating search for the note as dinosaurs break down the doors if you forget to write one down. The most puzzling thing is that many of my issues with this game weren't even problems in the first Resident Evil. Maybe they were were desperately trying to give Dino Crisis an identity separate from Resident Evil, and it seems they succeeded, because unlike Resident Evil, I didn't enjoy my time with it.
Since the announcement a few months ago, I had been excited to play this for the first time in 16 years since my GameCube copy went missing. Obviously, some of the amenities from that version (like Quick Turn and Auto-Aim) are missing, but it's not hard to adapt to life without them. Only real complaints I have involve the staticy voices and low quality cutscenes in the vanilla release.
