I normally dislike metroid-likes, but this one manages to knock it out of the park by having really unique mechanics. This is specifically more metroid than vania. It has some indie jank, like alt-tabbing causing the game to wet the bed, and the game is front-loaded with too much talking (take my advice and don't talk to the villagers, jjust keep walking right, you can figure it out as you go). It is, however, very hard. It has great mechanics, but when you jump, you can't change your momentum. This is the only metroidvania I've played like that so it definitely takes getitng used to. The game is easily made much more reasonable the second you figure out that there's an upgrades screen in the pause menu you can hit at any time, but even then you're going to have sore thumbs. Oh, yeah. Use a controller. Don't try to use a keyboard. You will die. IRL.
