I was delighted to see this show up here a few days ago. On steam, it is one of my most played games and I intend to put a lot more hours in here. Though this game is maybe less complex than 2 overall, trade routes are a lot less tedious to create, the graphics are much better and it works on modern systems. So far it has worked perfectly for me on Windows 10, i7 8750h and 2060 mobile. The game gets a solid 9/10 from me. It is arguably still the best in the series, even after the recent release of Port Royale 4 nearly 10 years later.
