Anarchronox presents the 90's school of videogame plot writing, in which the story was scraped together from a pool of mixed ideas created by a dozen of enthusiastic coders without any actual knowledge on writing. The heart and the drive is there, but the end result is too uncohesive to make any real sense. The dramatic moments are wasted due to the "humour" or the inappropriate character reactions that follow them. Gameplay (and especially combat) is boring due to its lack of meaningful choices; there isn't really all that much that the player CAN do in this one. With no character development, you just walk around clicking people and reading one poorly-written piece of dialogue after another, disrupted by the occasional battle. Too much time is spent running around from point A to point B and back, and the distances you need to cover are just ridiculous. Anarchronox is not a bad game per se; it's just woefully uninteresting to the point where you start to question whether there is any "game" to found at all. The story is way too weak, childish and uncohesive to save whatever remains.
