I played Resident Evil for the first time via GOG, and realized that it's at heart an old school adventure game! The static scenes aren't much different from classic "2D" adventure game screens. The addition of (admittedly awkward) combat supplies the "survival horror" where resources are limited compared to the enemies. Like other games of its era, RE contains delightfully cheesey voice acting and some FMV... the perfect translation of a "B" horror movie into video game terms. I never played the PlayStation original, so can't compare it, but there are at least two 'quality of life' improvements: transitions/loading screens can be skipped, and ink ribbons are not required to save.
