Freedom Fighters

Red Dawn: The Game

I played through this one several times back on the OG Xbox when it first released. Given the chance to play it with M&KB, in higher res and considering it was on sale, I couldn't pass it up. It plays exactly how I remember. Fast TPS action with light squad tactics and cover elements. Once you get used to the fairly odd firing cone of most weapons and learn to fire in bursts instead of single shots, the game becomes easier. With a decent story that falls somewhere between Red Dawn and The Division, this is an arcadey classic that is a definite purchase, especially if you catch it on sale. Highly Recommended!

EVERSPACE™ 2

Ever Better

While I loved the first Everspace with it's rogue-like gameplay loop and smooth, intense space dogfights, I always felt like I didn't make enough progress for the session length I'd put in. With this second installment, Rockfish went with a spaghetti-western feeling story and an emmensely larger prize pool of stuff to find or unlock. Plenty of side missions, destroyed ship detritus to loot through and a story that (so far I've yet to finish the damn thing) doesn't mind blind-siding you with twists and all manner of crazy stuff going on. If you like space combat with a whole lot of "dress-up" for your ships, don't miss this one! Highly Recommended!

Gods Will Fall

They Don't Fall Easily

As a whole, Gods Will Fall is quite a fun stratiegic hack-n-slash with what I find to be a nifty mechanic of the warriors stories, psyche and weapon proficiencies being procedurally generated for each playthrough. They gain and lose stats and abilities based on their companions victories or deaths and their personal primal fears of different situations. The combat is fairly solid but a major flaw in design is quickly realized and is the culprit for about 90% of charachter deaths. The parry action is tied to the dash action and the unforgiving timing window means to parry attacks you must dodge TOWARD an attacking enemy just as their weapon flashes. A miss leads to a several hit combo taking extreme toll on player health. If you can look past this (or, like me, forgo parrying) you'll become a glutton for this punishment as I have.

Re-Legion

Order of the Holy Syndicate

IDK, maybe I'm easily entertained these days but I'm kinda liking this so far. Granted, I caught it on sale for $1.49 but still, I almost didn't get it because of the reviews. I WAS NOT expecting "deep strategies" or "innovative tools. I was expecting to "persuadertron" people into my cult and immediately send them to their deaths fighting bad guys, and that's what it is. I'm getting really heavy vibes of Syndicate with a touch of Shadowrun Returns. And the voice acting is a bit bad but it sounds and feels purposely done. They are channeling (or maybe they are) Xerxies from 300, the Seraphim from Sacred 2 and some other guy I can't place. And trust me, you've heard this "Mission Complete" chick too. Full price is $9.99 and I got it on sale for a buck and a half so I have nothing to complain about. If it caught your eye and you're not expecting a tactics sim, you'll like it!
