I really loved MISSION VILEAF, so on first glance I just expected this game to be more of the same good. But that was a mistake. Somehow the graphics/level design seems to be worse than on the predecessor, I would even say ugly compared to the happy smurf village in Mission Vileaf. Concerning the village, now a hub you can always return to between missions, is missing. Instead you just play level/checkpoint after level/checkpoint etc. I experienced this now for two hours in a row and it just left me restless and bored. Very disappointed by this game... hopefully the next part will a comparable quality to the first game.
This is another of those games, that got a rather mediocre reception and I just cannot comprehend, why that is so. I followed the original game at release twenty-some-years ago, but I didn't play it at the time, since my hardware was not capable of rendering the voxel graphics with a reasonable performance. So I am actually new to Outcast. And for that, I still had a blast during the first 10hours of this game. The movement and the feeling of freedom are just amazing, of course a bit yanky in certain moments, but nothing grave, that could slightly ruin the great experience. Jetpack and Wingsuit are very well done, you can use it very early in the game in a very satisfying manner. The world design and graphics are beautiful in my opinion, the vertical levels just match perfectly the jetpack movability. Of course there are some standard fetch quests, but the let me use the jetpack, and therefore I never got tired of them until now. I guess the story is pretty standard, but it's okay for me, there are some memorable characters. I bought 1 day before release and took advantage of the 15% discount. The 60 € price tag might be a litte over the top. Not that the game might not be worth it, but I would definetely have hesitated in that case. Enjoy
Usually the setting in which this game takes place is not my cup of tea. Everything slightly historical bores me to death. But the demons really make up for it. This game has the exact amounts of horror and tension for me to be totally captivating. I love the characters and the world, the story is well written and exciting. If I had the time, I would have been "binge-playing" the game, like it was my favorite netflix series. I love reading in games, like the Pillars titles, like Disco Elysium, Torment, BG series, so this game is what I was looking for. The turn based fight were good and most of the time doable. Only one fight for a salutor or the other hat to be taken several times until I succeeded. I had 2 or 3 hours of boring grinding, since I could not interact with locked items, but I did not notice at that point, that I first had to get a salutor in the main campaign, before I could actually access these hints. Could have spared me sometime with a littel tutorial heads up, but I don't mind in the end. Great Game, fully recommend it.
