Hedon isn’t just another Doom total conversion — calling it that almost feels insulting. This is a full-fledged game crafted with passion and care. Even more impressive? It was (mostly) made by a single developer. Massive respect. Graphics are top-tier. The underground world’s textures, combined with superb lighting, create a deeply immersive atmosphere. Everything from weapon sprites and the HUD to NPCs and enemies is lovingly detailed. It has a retro look, but the engine is pushed to its limits — the “TV static” effect on portals is just the cherry on top. Sound design is meticulous — dripping water, the hum of machines, glitchy interference from reality-warping artifacts… It all enhances the mood set by the visuals. Soundtrack? Right after finishing the game, I went and bought Methadone Skies’ discography and a T-shirt. But the ambient work by Akhzul and heavy riffs by Breathelast also deserve full credit. Gameplay feels like a refined Hexen — no chaos, no confusion. Objectives are logical (brew potions from gathered ingredients), and the puzzles are fun — yes, even the algebra one. Combat is pure Doom-style mayhem: fast, fluid, and bloody. The Bearserk mode turns the action into a feral, melee-fueled dance. It’s glorious. Story follows Zan and her Iron Division sisters in a war against the Blue Baron’s hellish armies and the treacherous elf witch Nithriel. The world of Hedon is so richly built I’ve played through it twice — and a third run is calling. I’d honestly love to visit this place — as a tourist or adventurer. Pros: Gorgeous visuals Fantastic sound design Killer soundtrack Satisfying gameplay and smart quest design Deep lore and worldbuilding Made by one person (!?) Iron Division girls are absolute babes :) Cons: None Hedon is a rare gem. Old-school shooter with modern design and storytelling. It looks great, sounds even better, and plays like a dream. If you love brainy retro shooters with style, this one’s essential. Buy it. Play it. Praise it.
