Slipways brings you 4x interstellar strategy with one of the Xs missing (exterminate). If you are looking for a space empire trade, exploration management game but do not feel like micromanaging a sprawling civilization or do not want to deal with tedious real-time combat (at all), then this may be for you. Slipways is very straight forward in what it requires you to do, but also allows for many choices on how to approach developing your planetary colonies through technology unlocking, colony production choices, as well as giving you a list of missions to accomplish from time to time from your alien benefactors. The game is somewhat of a puzzle as you choose which planets to connect to each other and what they will produce for their neighbors, but I'm finding this to be very satisfying and not frustrating. The graphics and sound are pleasant and undistracting. The interface and options are adequate, keeping in line with being a game that is unencumbered with too many features. Truly a surprise release.
It's not that I forgot how fun this simple racing game is, it's just that it had been so long since I have played it. Game worked right out of the box - just had to populate the joystick control parameters by hitting 'default' on the joystick config screen after enabling it. Not sure what all these bantha poodoos are whining about really, but then, I'm not one who needs modern resolutions or sophisticated refresh rates or TRILINEAR filters to play a CLASSIC game. 4:3 FOREVER!
We're not amiss in labeling this as 'Ori-lite'. There's no combat, plenty of platforming and puzzle exploration in the style of Ori. I hear the complaints and I do agree - Seasons After Fall has its issues. But the issues did not dampen the delightful story, artwork, music for me not to recommend it.
but I like Starbound. I don't know if it's the differences in the interface, the fact that there's space travel, the variety of alien player character choices, or some other factors that make me want to play Starbound while shunning Terraria. But Starbound just works for me, and I'm enjoying it immensely.
