THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2002

Don't bother even if it's free

As others have said, KoF2002 is great, but this version is presented as poorly as possible. Main thing to say is that this isn't a direct PC port, it's a Neo Geo ROM running in an emulator... And the emulator it's running in is god-awful. Almost no options, just volume and Windowed/Fullscreen. The window can't be resized any other way, so you're in luck if you really hate freedom. Controls can't be rebound, and from the little I've played, the in-game control list doesn't even give you the right controls. The actual presentation of the emulator is laughably bad as well, the GUI and the cheesy background music feeling like the same sort of thing you'd get in really early 2000's emulators. You know, back before "taking yourself seriously as an emulator coder" was invented. I haven't played enough to encounter this, mainly because I value my time enough to avoid this but not enough to avoid leaving a max-length scathing review, but other reviews say that it doesn't support more than one controller, which makes local multiplayer useless, and once again since it's a really piss-poor emulator you're obviously not going to get online multiplayer out of it, either. There are two positives in my opinion: One is that despite the emulator's presentation and its draconian restrictions on options, the actual Neo Geo emulation itself appears to be perfect, or at least I didn't see any issues whatsoever in the short time I was able to play with keyboard controls that barely qualify as usable. The second and far more exciting/useful thing is that since you're basically being sold an emulator, it comes with the ROM and, apparently, the Neo Geo BIOS files, so you can at least legally use it in a different emulator worth its salt. You might even be able to rebind the controls that way! It might be worth picking up while it's still free just for the ROM, but if you don't know what you're doing with it then you're just stuck with a piss-poor emulator and a ROM you can't really use.
