Quake II

The worst of the Quake series by far

I bought this in a GoG bundle pack for nostalgia purposes. All the Quake games have a similar feel as far as controls, but they each have a somewhat different flavor in their setting and level design. The single player in Quake 2 is subpar compared to Quake 1 and Quake 4. The multiplayer is also not as good as Quake 1 or Quake 3. Quake 2 single player mostly revolves around shooting the same 3 enemies for hours and looking for switches to open doors. Wash, rinse, repeat. The graphical theme is repetitive and boring. It's easy to get lost in a level because every room looks identical. It doesn't have the diversity of the mutli-world time travel techno-fantasy feel of Quake 1. The music is decent, but also inferior to Quake 1 and Quake 3. It is however slightly better than the Quake 4 soundtrack which is the most boring of the bunch. Quake 2 was popular in its day because of the massive amount of mods and downloadable characters and levels. But after all is said and done, decades later, it doesn't hold up to the test of time. If you've never played a Quake game before, go with Quake 1 and Quake 4 for single player, or go with Quake 3 for multiplayer. Other similar games of the era, such as Unreal, are also better than Quake 2.
