Good mix of RTS and RPG. From my knowledge the RTS side was lacking at launch, but now it really feels like a solid game that could could be comparable to Warcraft 3 or The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth since the heroes play a very big part of your strategy. The RPG side also has decent build variety and from a gameplay perspective feels feature complete, but from a story perspective you don't have any meaningful choices and the story is linear (which is not really a bad thing). Tons of replay value just from skirmish and journey modes alone. Music is good, visuals are stunning, but the performance is kind of all over the place, some tinkering with the graphics settings might be required. Overall a must buy in my opinion, especially when it goes on sale.
Get yourself the Heroes 5.5 and Frax mods and play the best version of HoMM 5. Amazing game that still holds up to this day thanks to mods and an active community.

Still holds up to this day, especially if you get the HD mod and some content mods like HotA. Several hours of nostalgia fun, but you already knew that. Get the game here on GoG instead of the "remaster" on Steam.
